Viridian HS1 Hand Stop Laser ROCKS

But if it's zero'ed at 100 yards aren't you going to be subject to all the same holdovers/unders as you would with any other sight? Where will your impact be at 50 yards? 200 yards? 15' ?

Yes, but also remember that at 50yrds the dot is already almost 2 inches plus wide and by the time you get to 100 the dot from the laser was 4-5 inches wide. Depending on where you stop measuring the light cast off. The further you send the beam the wider it is. So when I sighted it in at 100 on a steel torso target the impacts were in the center of the beam. The offset from under the barrel is only about 3/4inch and by the time you get to distance the impact basically in the dot or spillover. The laser in not meant to take sniper shots the dot is not focused enough. But if I had to take a shot at distance it is good enough to take a center mass shot, but not necessarily good enough to take out the X. Does that make sense. I have a second one that I am going to sight in at 25 and then try to shoot it at 100 and try to see what the difference is. But even then remember the PDW is not meant for a national match shoot anyway.

I have my HS-1 mounted, but I haven't been able to get to the range yet. My intention for the (visible) laser is primarily HD distances. I would like to be able to use it for kicks out to about 50 yards I suppose, but primarily I want it to be very close to dead on between 3 yards and 25 yards.

I've been trying to wrap my head around the parallel to the bore concept, which in theory should put me 3/4" low at any given distance. I've confused myself.

I have it set about 1" below my red dot at about 13 yards and I notice that 1" grows at closer distances.

Oh, if you set it perfectly for 25 anything closer, the impacts are going to be below the dot up to the distance your dot is below the barrel bore. Really it depends on how long your barrel is and ammo you use, you are going to chase the perfect sight in. Best bet is decide your perfect distance, then half it and double it. So you wanted 25 make that perfect. Then shoot it at 12 and see how far below your dot is. Then go out to your kicks distance at 50 and see how far above you are. That way you know any shot you will take within 50yrds the max your imact away from the dot is X distance.

Remember the laser is a strait line, the bullet is not going in a strait line so the bullet is either going up towards the laser or falling away from the laser.

Good articles. I read them the other night. Even though they are focusing on handguns they are still relevant. Other than the part about using the laser in conjunction with my sights. If I have my carbine shouldered and I'm looking through my sights I do not need a laser. Now that's not to say that at the range I might not occasionally use the laser on a 50 yard shot, but I'm definitely not trying to make the POI close at 50 yards at the expense of accuracy at 20 feet. Essentially I want the laser zero'ed where POI will be within a couple inches of POA anywhere from 10 feet to 20-25 yards.

It was a sunny 40-ish degrees this morning so I took my AR to the range to sight in the Viridian HS-1. My first observation was that like the red lasers, the green laser is very difficult to see in the daylight. I don't know how you managed to zero it at 100 yards. I couldn't see the dot any further out than 15 yards. Did you zero it indoors? The next obstacle was self inflicted. When I mounted it I was hesitant to torque the screws down too hard. It is after all plastic. So after the first couple shots it was clearly no longer where I had put it. I didn't remove the screws and reapply the blue Loc-Tite, I just tightened the screws down as much as I dared and it stayed put for the rest of the session. Originally I set the laser in line with my red dot for windage and I noticed that after I had it zero'ed it was no longer in line. So I rechecked the red dot and sure enough it was my red dot that was off a little. Maybe 1/2". So I adjusted the red dot and all is well. I'm not overly concerned about the laser being zero'ed at 15 yards since that is likely about the distance I would need to use it at anyway, but I won't lie, I was a little disappointed that I couldn't see the dot at 25 yards, much less 50.

Oh I should have said that, during the day you can't see it, but at dusk into night that thing is gang busters.
