That article made me roll my eyes a few times.

My training says we are responsible for every bullet that leaves the muzzle. Tragic unforseen circumstances are possible, as were related in the text. Most of us don't live in the "Wild West" where they do it all the time on TV and in the movies.

I would think that only in a very, very rural area it may be possible to utilize a warning shot to chase away ne'er do wells. Any other situation would attract the wrong kind of (legal) attention. Shooting in the air is never a good idea but perhaps at a big tree or in the ground could save some legal hassles. Note: I'm no lawyer.

The issue with that even in a rural area in most jurisdictions a warning shot is considered deadly force or intimidation with a deadly weapon usually a felony!

The only place I have seen a warning shot allowed and or used is correctional setting within the environs of the institution IE towers Ina. Fence of a Prison!

One example that happened on Hitlers Birthday in 2008 at the US Penitentiary Florence Colorado white inmates become drunk on hootch on the rec yard and started some issues with black inmates the. It was in. Towers used less lethal and lethal and iver 409 rounds from M4’s alone were fired. Several of these were into the grounds as the 2 groups were facing off and it kept them at bay.
At the end of the melee 2 inmates were shot dead (on purpose) and 6 more suffered gunshot wounds and several others had stab wounds and severe injuries from what’s a typical prison yard assault
