Above we see the 542-class tank landing ship USS Meeker County (LST-980) arriving at San Diego, California, on 6 September 1970, capping a four-year stint in Vietnam.

The USN is looking at a similar type that the above does for $26 million, but for 7-10 times as much. More "gold-plating".

My entry for Warship Wednesday, 27 Dec 2023:

USS New York, BB-34 was my grandfather's home 1917 - 1919. Along with her sister ship, the Texas, were the last of the dreadnoughts. The New York operated in the North Atlantic, and was the flagship of Battleship Division 9 consisting of New York, Wyoming, Florida and Delaware which reinforced the British Grand Fleet porting in Scapa Flow. She then patrolled the North Sea. She was credited with the only kill of the division completely by accident by colliding with a U-boat. This is explained in the video.

A good video of the New York from construction through WWI and WWII is here:

Here is a painting of the New York returning to Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1919. We have a framed photo of the event from a different angle. My Mom and Dad had a portrait of BatDiv 9 commander, Adm Hugh Rodman which they donated to the Navy Museum in DC.

But you skipped ver the post-Nam LSTs with the high bridge-type off-ramp.
