It may seem gruesome but if they didn't know exactly what was happening the end result was instantaneous meaning they were gone in the like of an eye. Way too quick to register.

Scientist Scott Manley really put it best, at those pressures “you go from being biology to being physics” The implosion event takes 20 milliseconds whereas a pain response would take about 150 milliseconds. Basically you just instantly cease to exist before you're aware of something happening.
