SAINT
back in April of '21, i had my roof done.. it was a layover to existing shingles, as we are allowed 2 layers here (maybe all across the country, but i do not know)...i also had to have the skylight replaced at an additional $1,700 on the roofing of job of $15,000

we have had heavy rains for months on end here.

well, just minutes ago, i was in the bathroom, and i see a line of water coming down from my ceiling in the area of where the roof vent for the plumbing would be...............

now i have to wait for the company to open at 8:30, to inquire as to when they can come over, most likely Friday, as it's going to rain many more hours today.

God, i hope this is covered under warranty........(they have a 15 year warranty on thier work), God i hope the vent pipe is not cracked.

it sucks to be on SS, i hate it, and every time i apply for a job, just a part time job like a custodian for example, i get looked over.....

like christ, you gotta be young to swing a mop..???

i ain't looking to get rich, just some "mad money"..........which i might be needing, if this is gonna cost me.

It sucks in this day and age when a person on social security can't get a part-time job whether they need it because our economy or they just want some extra mad money.
Portillos near me hire a lot of seniors to sweep floors and wipe tables.
Good Luck!!

Any State or Federal Parks nearby ?
A lot of times they hire seniors to man the park or do tasks needed to be done. Like manning the gate

that stuff for the parks and recreation are on a lottery system. city, town, or state.

way too many applicants....and mostly always go to the young

i have tried, Indeed, Craigs List, which both have full time/part time jobs.

it's when you fill out the application, and of course, if you don't add your SS number, you cannot advance to the next step, they don't even have to ask your age (not supposed to) they already know your age by the number.

one job, "we do not discriminate against sexual preference, color, religion, blah, blah, blah"....but there IS age discrimination for sure.

it's all too real.

sucks being old, WANTING to work, and get turned down...yet they hire the young, who fiddle with thier texting BS, provide losey service, that get hired..wanna know the real reason why...??

the jobs KNOW that they cannot push us old people around, as easily as the young

i had an "in" for a clerk job at a liquor store....the owners ARE OLD, thier son IS OLD......they KNEW the person that sent me there..........

application only.........called back like 1 week later.........then 1 month later.......2 months later, to let them know i was still available.....

nuffin..........

sucks to wanna work, and get turned down

i tried Buffalo Wild Wings, recommended by LinkedIn, due to my resume, turned down.....

simple custodian job, nightly, which I LOVE working nights

What really sucks is all these HR professionals say not to include your age, but if you are truthful on your resume a grade school kid can figure out your age and if you skip a few years on your resume you are considered not truthful.
I guess bottom line is that when you reach a certain age they expect you to buy a loaf of bread, sit on a bench and feed the birds....

We are having a similar experience with our A/C. Fortunately, we have a homeowners warranty and they know the vast majority of claims are for A/C and are very stingy on big jobs. We had just had the system services 2.5 months ago and the guy never mentioned our air handler was going kaput. One day came home and the house was warm even though the A/C was putting out, just not enough. Put in a claim and a different company came out and showed how the coil was corroded and said he would push for a whole new air handler and the warranty folks agreed. Downside: we are now awaiting parts to come in which could take seven business days. I'm going to get some cheap window units for the bedrooms because at some point our fans and the A/C fan only mode won't cut it. Thankfully, it has been slighty cooler with rain storms.

As to the job situation, age discrimination has been the only acceptable form of discrimination for a couple of decades now. In my experience, even with gov't / contractor jobs. Upon returning from overseas about six years ago I get my teacher's certification and haven't had a problem getting a job, but the establishment still looks down on us seniors. And if my health is OK I have been able to work at the local grocery store during the summer. IMO, the younger bosses don't like our bluntness and our uncooperative stance on their BS. In the day, we said our piece and went back to work. Today's bosses are sensitive to the so-called threat to their fiefdom and won't risk hiring us.

the job i retired from, i got on Craig's list.

i was surprised at first, cuz several jobs before that, i got turned down, when they asked my salary from that job.

the soon to be new boss said to me, "i'd prefer older people, they show up, do the job and go home"

not too many bosses like that left.

sadly too, he had cancer, left the job, and i never found out anything else.

That really sucks.

It’s probably or a crack in the neoprene boot that goes around the vent stack. A little tar will fix it.
well, i hope it is that easy a fix. i am sweating here thinking much worse.

like the old saying, "if i didn't have bad luck, i'd have no luck at all"

i cannot say what the guys did, the day they laid down the shingles, i was watching them, on one side of the house, and for the life of me, i am not certain i saw them install a new (aluminum??) cover over the old.......i have 3 vents up there.

the water was not pouring down my wall, but "trickling".

still enough for my heart to pound rapidly

They probably didn’t replace the aluminum/ neoprene boot. It’s possible they didn’t even remove it from under the original roof and just tarred around the cut. If that’s the case they need to remove the shingles around the stack and put a new boot on then re-shingle around the stack.

If it’s trickling near the stack I almost guarantee that’s what it is brother.

FWIW I never do roof overs. I always tear off the original. If for no other reason than a roof over takes 5 years off the life of your roof. So 30 year shingles are only good for 25.

regarding the lay-over..the roof was done in spring of 1994, and back then, all new wood was laid down, it was expensive back then, and thick too.

i showed the roofer the invoice of that time.

he said he can do a lay-over, as it is normal to do so, since i had proof of the job back then. if i recall, the price way back then was $8,000

if i had to do a complete roof tear down, with the prices of the wood and materials, it would have went from $15,000 to well near $30,000 ....(don't forget, the scandemic was going on, as well as shortages, and price spikes)...i think the wood alone was going for about $150 a sheet.

i don't have any plans on being here past another 15 years.

i'll either be in a nursing home, or my grave, and i am not poking fun, i am serious.

it ain't like i got a lot more years ahead.

in fact too, 1994 was the same year...April Fools Day in fact, i got myself a new Ford T-Bird........

then the damned roof needed to be replaced, a few week later

moral of that..??

don't buy a new vehicle on April Fools Day

this is satellite generated view of the roof. (there are 2 smaller roofs on the backside, not seen here)

I live in cargo shorts April - November.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with Old_Me! I hope you save him some $$$.

That don’t sound right. Double the price for doing a tear off ? If the roof was done in ‘94 and you had no issues the wood should all be fine. It should not cost double the price just to tear off one layer of shingles.

Hey Old_Me, just do what I did ... buy yourself a really skimpy speedo and take a weekend trip down to Miami. Get out on the beach and sell your body!!!

Well actually I didn't really do that, but pretty close. I sat on my front porch swing in my 'tighty whities' pretending I was on a plane headed to Miami. LOL!
