What future for humanity?

Master Class
People, this world is doomed and I'm lucky to be a sick old man and not have much more to live through. I spent last week in the hospital because of kidney function problems. Thursday afternoon a young lady came to my room to perform an ultrasound on my Kidneys and bladder. This lady was somewhere in her mid to late 20s and appeared to know what she was doing. During the ultrasound she was watching a large screen of what was showing up. I told her I would like to have an 8x10 and 2 5x7s of that shot. She gave me a really weird look but said nothing. She finished up the ultrasounds and packed up her equipment to leave, then stopped and looked at me. She told me she thinks I'm getting senile just like her mother and grandmother, they use this same strange code that I'm using. She said they are always working on some kind of projects and she hears their code talk about 2x4s and 1x6s, now here I am asking her about 8x7s and 5x10s. She said she is glad we're old and she doesn't have to rely on our generation for survival. I watched her leave without saying a word, I was actually scared to say anything that might set her off.

I swear every word of this is true, and I just can't get it out of my mind that this young lady is educated and a member of the team of people that hold my health in their hands.

I'd be asking for a different nurse. Seriously, get your family involved with the administration of the hospital and push to get her changed. That attitude in healthcare is total bs.

It's not her attitude that worries me, it's her total lack of general knowledge and common since. She had no idea as to what an 8x10 or 5x7 meant when looking at a picture, and to think we have a secret code because people working on a project mention 2x4s or 1x6s. What kind of bubble has she been hidden in. Need to rid the world of video games and social media, they are destroying our youth.

You gotta remember, those folks are from the digital age. I had high school students who couldn't tell time on a regular analog watch. They should have been taught that back in early elementary school. Heck, most schools no longer teach cursive either.

I'd still be concerned about her attitude, but that's just me.

Teaching history in school is rapidly becoming a thing of the past also. Most kids these days are too wrapped up in the most current internet personality or other trend in social media to even be bothered with having a curiosity in the past. Even full grown adults have become phone zombies and you can see this everywhere from parents pushing baby carriages to the grocery store where everyone's just face down into their phone.

It really is a sad time we live in....☹️

The future of humanity didn't start going down just lately. It began in 1960 with the election of Kennedy. Kennedy "won" the 1960 election by stealing the election? Sound familiar? It's well-known that Jack's daddy Joe Kennedy hooked up with Illinois (the 1960 version of Pennsylvania) mobsters to make votes "disappear" in Republican counties. Win Illinois and you win the presidency and that's what happened. Once Kennedy was in, he appointed his brother, Bobby, as attorney general. Bobby and Jack double-crossed the mob by prosecuting them making the then unknown word "mafia" a household word. Is it a wonder both would up soon after pushing up daisies? The Kennedy sex and drug culture of the 60's bred the subsequent "me" generation which liberalized everything, especially education. The "me" generation bred the current generation of idiots that are coddled by their parents (still living at home into their 30's and older), dumb as rocks (liberal indoctrination instead of education), too lazy to work and wanting someone to continue take to care of them after their parents drop dead (socialism).

That's it in a nutshell papadan. The world you see is the bottom of the slippery slope we allowed to happen. Actually, we haven't hit the bottom of that slope yet, but with the current election, we'll get there real quick. I remember the life's priorities expressed by Vince Lombardi as I grew up; God, Family and Work. Sure, there are many who want our Constitution enforced and respected again. The only way to get back to our Constitution and those lost priorities, sadly, is civil war (the nation has never been so divided and uncompromising). That's not likely because we've become a nation of observers, not doers.

I had a conversation the other day about a 20th anniversary campaign that we are working on. One of the designers came up with an XX design and it got rejected because “the kids” don’t know what Roman numerals are anymore.

Nor do they understand cursive writing. Or penmanship in general.

I taught college in the late 90s/early 2000s. Theatrical Stagecraft - color theory, lighting design, electrician, audio design, sound reinforcement, set design and construction. It was frightening - even then - how many college-age kids didn't know what a "screw gun" or even a "hammer" was, much less how to use them properly.

And don't get me started on table saws or measuring tapes.

Parents don't / aren't allowed to discipline their children. If they do, they get in trouble with child protective services. Their teachers rat on the parents. I'm not talking abuse, either - I'm talking plain ol' discipline. Parents these days - if they even pay attention to their little tax breaks...er, children, at all, would rather be their friends than a role model or source of discipline.

I grew up in a Navy household. Dad was Cdr.-USN/Ret; 4 campaigns in Korea. He was German (first generation American, son of legal immigrants). And, he was a CPA. There was....quite a bit of discipline in our house. I was balancing my checkbook before I could write cursive. I went to Catholic school, so I know God, and I know Roman numerals. I also know knit ties, and still have a bit of a thing for plaid skirts...but I digress ;) Dad had a lot of rules I didn't like at the time...but that's what rules are, and I get that now. I appreciate every single one of them, now. I know why he did it, and they've all made me a better person.

And, that is all completely lost on society today.

Pisses me off when I get to the cashier and they're on their phone. I went thru the drive through at a local "fast food" place, and when I got to the window to pay the kid was on their phone and actually held up their finger and said be right with you. I asked them if they could call their mgr, and the kid replied "I don't have his number". When I got to the second window to get my food I asked to speak with a mgr, which I did. Haven't seen that kid there since. Maybe they're home on their phone looking for a job.

Those are those "character-building" days/lessons :) . Dad was career Army. My siblings and I had a lot of "character-building" days/lessons. :)

Joe, I don't believe it's totally lost. Parents like you father are still teaching their children family values, and the importance of things like hard work, discipline, and respect for others. I did the same, and told my kids to build upon the foundation I provided to make their families better than the generation before. I believe it starts at home.

It absolutely starts at home.

The loss (in general) of the Nuclear Family is a huge loss to society. 2 parents are pretty much required. Single 'rents can handle it...but it is much harder, and not many people have the fortitude these days for that (or much else, really). Mainstream acceptance that "you don't need a dad/husband/man in the house", and "sexism", and "there are more than two genders", and all of those "enlightened" social ideas only go to further erode our Nation's structure as well as the concept of Family.

True - there are still some parents and families who "get it". But, we're in the minority now - and we're actively being shunned by the general population, the members of our Government (see the attacks on ACB during her confirmation - not for her legal mind, but for her family values and her faith), and by society at large.

And without that...we get what Dan experienced in the hospital, along with all the other anecdotes above.

Are you sure she wasn't playing you? I'd bet a dollar to a donut she has heard something like your request a thousand times.

That's shocking Papadan. I will usually tell the person that I'm joking and explain what I was referring to, in the hopes of at least trying to educate that person (whenever I come across someone like this that is).
I hope you're doing well, and wish you the best health going forward.

I watched this video some time ago, where they ask two teenagers to call a phone number using a rotary dial phone (they asked other teens to do the same, as part of this experiment). Sadly, the video was hilarious. They tried several "ingenious" methods, and came close to the solution as the time limit was set to expired. It was however impressive to see them working together to try to figure out the solution to their task.

So many people that can't seem to function in life without staring at their smart (aks Zombie) phones,

I was on top of a 10,000 ft+ mountain in a wilderness area last summer, and there were other hikers there complaining they couldn't get coverage. Some were trying to figure out where north was, so I told them which way & showed them my compass, They said they didn't need one since their phones would tell them which way it was.

Smart phones make people dumb.

I would have been asking for the floor manager and reporting her for her comment on your mental cognitive function. She had no ethical right to say something like that to you and does not deserve to be working in that field and dealing with people. That is the rudest thing to say to someone and was completely out of the scope of her job function. I would have been screaming for her to be disciplined and taken it to the hospital administration if need be.

I've been thinking about your comment since I read it earlier and I'm stunned. This country was founded by people who came together from both sides of the aisle and forged this great republic. We so cling to the words of these men and lionize them as supermen, but then too often we turn our backs on what they ascribed to. We're all just trying to create a place where our families can be happy and safe, but it feels like we are all collectively doing our best to prevent that. And as a naturalized citizen and someone who made the choice to live in this magnificent country, to hear someone promote the taking up arms as the only solution is truly saddening.
