Tried pointing once but the dog struggled with getting the shot off.

Do not do the whole thumbs forward thing. I use the grip i learned 50 years ago , and plan on using a bit longer. If it aint broke, we'll you know. As far as manipulation i normally have to cant my head to the right more to center my shots due to cross dominance unless I move the sights to correct which I do not do a lot because my wife might be shooting it.

Same. I initially canted my head slightly until an instructor told me to bring the gun up in front of the correct eye. I shoot much better now.

Using a red dot really illustrates the need to bring the gun to eye level.

My instructor called it turtling. Don’t be a turtle.
I trained myself around cross eye dominance with iron sights. Which a red dot kinda negates, but not really. I still draw the exact same way.
