What Is a Practical Zero?

An easy way to become a “long distance shooter” when no true long ranges are available is precision .22 LR. A hit with a .22 at 200 is as satisfying as a .308 at 600😊
Yeah, I saw 22 plinkster hit a 22LR at 700+ yards (coke can if I remember). He still had a pretty souped-up 22 if I remember correctly....not a stock Ruger 10/22. Now that I think of it, I don't even own anything in 22....

But I'm open to be converted!

Mine is a Ruger American Rimfire with a 22" barrel .... Easy shooting to 200+y

yup i have a less costly .22 ruger rifle that has a nice little scope
its a blast plinking the 100 yard metal....plus no sore shoulder after 300 rounds
Plus those .22 rounds are much less costly after shooting those 300. I once thought a .338 Lapua would be nice and then I found out the cost of each round. In a similar vein, I once thought about getting a machine gun and then thought about how much to shoot multiple bursts.
Years ago I watched some long range shooters at a cowboy side match. I asked where the target was. They pointed at something about 300 yards distant. I looked again and asked, where the target was? Needless to say, I was no longer interested in shooting long range.
I applaud those who can shoot at crazy distances, but I cringe when they discuss shooting an animal at something over 250 yards. Some folks switch to antique or replica arms to make things more challenging. Others have gone to bow hunting for similar reasons.

I switched to traditional black powder long rifles decades ago for that very reason. I used to shoot at fairly decent ranges (out to 600) with my match Garand and an old 6.5x55 Swede Mauser. It was fun and does help develop skills. Plus I used to shoot pasture poodles out to 400-450 with a Ruger 77V in .220 Swift. Prefer hunting in the woods with my long guns and a patched round ball. Range is typically 75 or less. For a real hunting challenge get a .32 or .36 round ball rifle and try squirrels. That puts the hunt back in hunting (and will make you a much better deer Hunter at the same time.

😱 I'd be happy to hit one at 10 yards.
we had a freak of nature at our clubs turkey shoots using our clubs ruger 22 plinker rifles
at 100 feet , a hanging golf ball on string gently moving with the breeze , he would drive a bullet through the center, like it was 3 feet away
he was repeatable , sit down, aim and plink another golf ball with a new hole

not to mention he would shoot one handed with his 1911 and just drive bullets into the the same set of holes over and over...
he would do it with my 1911 cold and bam dead on

he said he spent 5 or 6 years in the marines and all he did for a job was range days 4 days a week for 1ks of rounds or more
i think the firearms are part of his arm
