What type of sight and how has it changed over time

For general all around use, target, self defence, hunting what is your general do it all sight that you find works for you. And how has it changed?

Now personally I think there are probably hundreds of answers to this. Everyone is different, with unique characteristics both mental and physical, and different training all of which influences their choice.

I used to prefer an express setup on handguns and rifles both. This consisted of a v notch rear sight, often with a single vertical line on the bottom of the notch and a gold or ivory bead up front. This worked well for me.

Then I started getting older and I found that on a handgun a bright green front sight was easier to focus on for me. Along with this I now prefer a serrated or plain black rear sight, no dots preferred.

One day maybe I will get this setup on my lever action but for now it's still the gold bead setup but not quite a true express rear sight.

My eye sight hasn't changed so no changes on what type I'll need. As far as rifle and handguns go I'm all over from iron, illuminated/glowing, rds, scopes and combination of. From KNS I have a 2 cross hair front sight set up for a combination of ranges. When math is worked out it gives me 6 ranges. Depending on space between front rear (usually about 75-80% of barrel length spacing. A 16" barrel I'll do 12-13" separation. Factors are handguard length.

I clearly remember the day I fell in love. It was early in my handgunning "career," when a local cop and part-time clerk at my favorite gun shop showed me his S&W Kit Gun with S&W factory-installed Red Ramp front and White Outline rear sights installed. I was amazed at how clear and clean and sharp these sights looked! VERY shortly thereafter I had S&W RR/WO sights installed on my homebuilt 1911 (my only handgun at the time), which was NOT cheap, even in those days. It is still my preferred handgun sight picture to this day, and I have them on many of my guns, though in some cases they're painted on (not red plastic insert). Here's that very homebrewed 1911, which I still have.

I do like the Tru Glo sights too. That is usually what I buy if they don't come factory night sights.

Although not the reason I sold the gun and it was something I thought I would get used to was the all black sights on my SA 1911 RO 45ACP my old tired eyes needed some color.

I’m very happy with the white U rear sight on my Elite Compact 10mm, and my 1911 Emissary which includes the Tritium front sight as well.

Yes I do currently have a Holosun Red Dot on my Elite 10 but when I first bought the gun I shot just irons and found the white U rear and fiber optic front helped with Target acquisition including follow up shots.

Love those white U dot rear sights on xdm and hellcat. definitely fast acquisition. Called springfield armory to see if i can buy some to install on my xd9 but they only currently sell So the hellcat standard and osp rear u dot. i was able to install a hellcat standard u notch on my xd...its not a seamless fit like the xdm u notch would be but acquisition is still dead on. Anyone know where i can get an xdm rear u notch/dot sight let me know! thanks.
