I wear a chest rig every hog hunt.
Ammo Mags, Water, Snack bar or light. Sometimes an assortment of all or just ammo

I've seen a multitude of pics and vids of soldiers and tactical wannabes carrying a pistol in a chest holster...i guess that doesn't count for gunfighting?

I believe the intent of the original picture/statement meant his setup was not being used for gun fighting, not thier use in general by everyone.

Chest holsters are very useful for carrying when wearing a backpack, and allow for easy access to the pistol/revolver in case of bumping into large 4-legged critters. They are very popular in the interior west and Alaska.
