Why no Hellcat in .40

.40 S&W just isn't that popular these days. It's not nearly as readily available as 9mm, it's considerably more expensive, and a good 9mm hollow point with the advances in modern technology and manufacturing is damn near on par in terms of performance these days. Throw in the fact that you lose significant capacity when compared to 9mm and there are a bunch of reasons why it's lost popularity.

Personal opinion, it's an outdated round that is going to become more "boutique" in the coming years.

I love shooting and have a concealed carry permit. I don't actually like the Shield but its what I carry because the Hellcat and other pistols are not available in .40.
I have a Shield .40 and a Shield .45. I haven't carried or shot the Shield .40 in a pretty good long while now. The .45 is a fantastic carry gun. When they make the Shield Plus in .45 I'll be buying one.

I don't think the .40 is going anywhere, but SA, and especially right now, is only going to focus on models that sell well. And .40s don't sell well.

Also have a Shield in .40 and I do carry it. Hellcat posted on the approved gun roster about a month ago. Neutered version of course. If they do ever make one in 40, it will be low capacity and show up here a year or two after everyone else has been carrying them.

Every thing I see being offered is being called low capacity to satisfy states the don’t allow more then 10 rounds in a magazine. It’s easier then making two different types of the same gun.
I’m glad I bought the guns I did when I did.

A guy I met yesterday who did 40 years LEO in Colorado told me that any gun store in Colorado will sell you a high cap mag. It comes in a kit and is called something else. And the only time that law is prosecuted is if it is in conjunction with another felony crime. And generally only in Denver.

I don’t believe that. I agree it’s not as popular but I feel it’s not going away.
My opinion.
Few manufacturers are making .40’s in the new models they put out, and many are phasing out .40s in their existing lines.

Sure ammo will be around; you can still get new production .41 Colt or .38-40 Winchester.

But you’re going to see less and less new handguns in .40.

I also have the 40 shield. I did have the 45 shield but I traded for the hellcat. I wanted the 45 but was just too heavy for me to CCW (back issues). I don't even carry the 40 shield anymore. I have carried the Hellcat everyday since October and after reading about 9mm bullet penetration I do not feel under powered. I really like the Hellcat and the capacity. I cannot purchase a new 40 cal at my LGS, he doesn't have any but I can purchase all the 40 cal ammo I want as no-one is purchasing it anymore. The 9mm is king when it comes to caliber for the masses, its just a fact.

When the .40 cal was introduced and embraced by many in law enforcement, the 10mm sort of lost out and fell out of favor for a while. But the 10mm came back as strong as ever. Trends come and go in the gun business. Who knows, the .40 cal may return from the brink of extinction.
