Why You Should Use Premium Ammo In Your Defensive Gun

Good read on why you should use premium ammo for defense, now, that is if you can find it, if not, then regular practice ammo will have to do, especially right now during the ammo shortage going on.

Thanks for posting Anni,
Is like you basically stated. Article was originally posted 5/22/2021 but? Writer sounds a bit overly idealistic in ammo usage and type for typical person known or heard about, in a far away land or they may have reposted an old article?

I’m pretty typical, and I’ve used every single round he mentions in the article in one gun or another.

And definitely not idealistic. Pretty much any trainer worth your time would tell you the exact same thing.

Most of us are like you. Am talking about in today's scenario and ammo scarcity for many people. Normally would agree with authors statement as well.

I kinda thought the same, but decided to post it anyway.

I agree with this, after all it’s been doing it for years
When you train with the ammo you carry what type it is becomes way less important. Within reason. Does it cycle and fire reliably? Can you maintain consistent accuracy with it? That stuff is important regardless of how “premium” it is.

Most of us do our own testing for what works best in what gun. Then we train with that.

Ammo is becoming more and more available...the prices aren’t coming down yet, though.

And while the premium lines are probably the best choice (assuming you & your gun like them), there’s a lot of “lower tier” JHP's out there that also have a pretty good track record.

Hornady's XTP is a solid performer in all calibers (and I'd likely sooner use it than critical defense/duty in most calibers), and can often be found in other manufacturer' lines for less (Fiocchi comes immediately to mind; I bought a bunch of their .357 Mag Perfecta 125gr XTP's for under $20 a box not long before everything went sideways...they perform quite well, and give respectable performance—1200fps+—even out of snubs).

Winchester White Box “Personal Protection” line has a surprisingly good performance record in tests. Their .40’s were, briefly, a contract overrun of brass cased Ranger-T...ammo that was typically .60-.70 a round could be had for about half price.

Federal Hi-Shock is also a solid performer; their 9mm 9BPLE load is street proven...the Border Patrol used it prior to going .40 and swore by it. Their 185gr .45 load is also a solid performer.

So...there’s options besides premium.
