1) could have been a college prank...they used to do things like that. here someone cut off the moose at its hoofs, at the old Bugaboo Steak House.

2) could have been a hate group

3) could have been someone (organized group) that wanted to cut up the rest of the statute to take to the scrap yard.

Important statues from all over the world are stolen and sold to the rich. I watched a TV show once that had a bunch of recovered statues after their owners had died whether stone, marble, copper, bronze or brass all were cut off at the feet.
It's disgusting yet prevalent.
All it takes is some dipstick and cash.

It's a shame, and I can relate. There was a rash of statue smashings in Richmond several years ago. I understand how folks in Kansas feel.
