Wildfires in Lahaina West Maui.

local government blamed the power company but pwr sued them stating the lines were down and non powered up
my guess is a person might have done it on purpose or accident and winds took it out of control
plus the water plugs fire hydrants were OFF no water ??? in a residential area??
climate change did it

My barber used to live in Lahaina. We talked about this during my last visit.

She said the majority of the homes were older and wood, and the adjacent former sugar cane/pineapple fields that you see on the aerial pics to the N/NW had gone feral with grasses & shrubs. Grass's & shrubs are very flammable & flashy fuel types

A fire risk assessment that was done a few tears ago Identified the very high risk under high wind conditions.

All that happened weather-wise, and like the recent California/Oregon & Washington state "powerline fires", the power company admitted the ignition source was their fault.

But, also the risk assessment identified goals & objectives to reduce the fuels in the large area next to town.

The Hawaiian govt & power company failed to do all that, & fire happened. Once the fire hit the outskirts of town then the wooden homes increased the fuel loading & it all turned into a conflagration.

In the pics the places that were unburnt/slightly damaged were constructed with concrete with tile/metal roofs.

RIP to those that died. A bad way to go.

The guy they put in charge of water, worshipped water and that was why he didn't turn it on. At least I heard something to that effect on the radio.

i heard something along those lines
but a fire hydrant..not having water is a serious safety issue as in the CITY is not providing the safety and security to its people. who owns the water company?

didnt fire marshall have a say on fire and ability of crews to hmmm fight fires?
we will never know,

Poor land management/forestry practices set the stage for that fire, it just needed a spark.
THIS!
and I'll bet a dollar to a donut that those management and practices guidelines were set by tree hugging save the planet eco wack jobs with no experience but plenty of "education", or in response to court orders from lawsuits filed by the same moonbats.

Federal money that should have been spent on decreasing the conditions that contributed to this disaster, which were well known, were instead spent on "Green energy" initiatives by the democrats in charge. I find it more than a little amusing that democrats have been in charge of Hawaii, an island in the middle of the Pacific, well away from the mainland, and has been basically independently run by progressive liberal democrats for as long as anyone can remember and all we are hearing about is how this fire is proof of climate change.

Nature uses fire to clean up and renew. I live next to a 550,000 acre state forest and there are hundreds of thousands of acres of privately held woodlands here. Lack of forestry management pactices would turn this area into an inferno during certain times of the year. Contolled burns and control of invasive plants that are fuel for wildfires are essential for tree growth, wildlife, and reducing the risk of destructive wildfires. California has set themseves up for devastating wildfires through uninformed land and forestry management practices. I don't know Hawaii's practices but presume they are of the same ilk.

Indeed they are. And Kalifornia, you know, the state who makes the claim that they are carrying all the rest of us, has devastating fires yearly and have forever. They blame it on climate change every single time and then beg for federal disaster relief. Who's carrying who ?

The tree huggers had nothing to do with it since Lahaina is on the dry side of West Maui and that area didn't support trees before the corporate (Dole pineapple) converted the native grass/shrubs environment to pineapple & sugar cane fields. When that business shut down those areas reverted back to grass/shrublands plus with the addition of non-native plants.

But, regarding land management, the state/county govts failed to implement their on risk assessment/reduction plans and diverted funds to more wind mills to meet the current fad for so-called green energy. But hen again Hawaii has no potential for oil/hydro power but plenty of wind so they dropped the ball on controlling the fire risk to Lahaina and other similar areas throughout the state.

FUBAR

"West Maui and that area didn't support trees" in response to my "tree hugger" comment was what the "for crying out loud" was for.
You're so sure I don't know about wildfires, abandoned and overgrown land, or Maui, I'll just bow out.

Long before California had a population they had trees that for thousands of years needed fire to release their seeds to grow. Maybe just maybe that is why many don't have branches until 100+ feet up and bark that is about a foot thick to protect the tree.....

But what do I know🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
