Winchester wins the Army 6.8 NGSW ammo contract

How ? Unless I'm misunderstanding the question.

6.8ngsw is based on the .308

6.8 western I thought was based on 30/06 cartridge.
No, the western is a shot mag. The new 308 based 6.8 is a high pressure round I believe at 80k psi with a steel case head too handle the higher pressure. Imagine the muzzle blast! I think they are suppressor equiped? The 30-06 is a 270win or more like the 270win is a 30-06.

Sorry....both are called 6.8, I assumed that meant 6.8mm bullet. Bullet "nomenclature" is so fouled up...I know a lot of it, but so much is not based on any logical method.

So I don’t want to hijack this thread but someone please explain to me how that new gun works? It looks very uncomfortable with the magazine behind the grip and it seems to me there is a lot of mechanical activity to fire the gun with the round behind the trigger?

It’s called a bullpup; it’s a great way to make a more compact weapon without shortening the barrel.

It’s also quite proven, with rifles like the Steyr AUG (and the Australian version, the Lithgow F90), L85 (British Army’s service rifle) the Israeli Tavor, and the Chinese QBZ95 out there and well thought of.

As far as shooting comfort? They rock. Incredibly well balanced, compact, and easy to use.

In fact, I far prefer my AUG to an AR.

I does get some weight to the back for sure as you stated about balance.

For a support weapon (non mounted support) I'd bet standing or kneeling it would be better than m60 or 249saw. Next thing what about barrel life under full auto along with suppressor life too boot? Even with some sort of improved chamber for the higher pressure to heat would kill the throat.

The new gun & round hasn't been seleted yet.

Since Winchester has the current contract to run Lake City is was a given that Winchester would make the new round (whichever of the two developed is selected) for the new rifle when it is selected.
