WML Length

McGanksta

Operator
Ok, in about a month, I am pulling the trigger on the AOS Operator 4.25 (.45ACP)
Will more than likely get a Holosun 507K X2 for the RDS.

As far as lights go, I have nevere used/mounted one on a pistol, what is the thought process on if it should tuck under the end of the pistol, sit as close to flush as possible, of extend past the barrel?

TIA

I’m not a big WML guy that said though of if I did I like it to be flush.

I have heard some thought process that if it extends it serves as a stand off deduce but that is not true. You still run the risk of having the slide or the perp being able to knock the slide out of battery. That’s a whole other topic though!

I appreciate a weapon mounted light for certain professions. But in the civilian world...I can't make the math work. The extra weight and bulk carrying it every day concealed is a big ask. As a civilian I am not likely to be clearing houses. As a home defense gun? No, I am not going to turn to a sidearm, the weakest arm in my battery, to defend my life and the life of my wife. No kids, so if the alarm goes off at two in the morning we are hunkering down and waiting for the police. My wife shoots in a weekly Sporting Clays league and is pretty handy with a shotgun...I am no slouch with a scattergun either. This is the wrong house...and if somebody tries to break down our uparmored bedroom door, they will find that out. So I am missing the mission here...if you are getting a 4.25 Commander length BBL, that says concealed carry to me. The light crosses the weight line for me, and I carried a full size five inch Government Model 1911 for decades.

Fully understand and appreciate the thoughts presented here.
I don't have kids either, or a wife that would be handy in that situation.
Or, a shotty for that matter, I have a 9mm Ronin 4.25 for carry.

This is just a "I want" gun, but I am also looking for some information on practicality, to help me decide on what "I want"

Thank you again!

Well, wants are a different thing altogether. Want is what makes America great! Needs are for Commies, standing in line for hours at the grocery store to buy beets and Orphanage Grade Single Ply Toilet Paper. Here in America, we want something we save our money or put in for some overtime and buy it. So yes, by all means a 9 mm platform 1911 should be on everyone's "want" list. I am a die hard .45 guy, but when a buddy let me shoot his 9 mm 1911 at the range (dang you Ried!) I ended up buying a full size Colt 1911 in 9 mm that week. They are a hoot! And I can put twice as many rounds down range for the same money as opposed to the .45...unless you are as wealthy as Scrooge McDuck or the Monopoly Man, that kind of savings adds up.

I am about to make a purchase for a first WML for home def pistol myself (not EDC, not for a holster). MOST WMLs extend out beyond the barrel/slide for what ECS says above...but ECS is correct that it is not foolproof that a semi-auto can't be manipulated with an extended WML. It may help, though. Leaving holster-carry out of the equation and an extended WML seems reasonable to me.

I used to worry about flagging, but WMLs are so damn bright, you point them at the floor and a dark room is bright as day. This was mentioned in another forum recently...

I saw a 1000 lumen model yesterday for about $100....might have to go find that one again...
