(Wrist) Watch thread

I was sittin here drinking my coffee and thought about how it would be nice to have a new watch for my birthday (next week 😉) so I though I’d post a thread and see what y’all had. I have several that I am very pleased with and I don’t “need” a watch I enjoy them. I’ll post some of mine in a few.

Garmin Vivoactive3 here. Timepiece part is marginally irrelevant, what with cell phone clocks and all, but I am trying to keep from getting TOO fat (old, I can't stop...but fat I can fight). Great piece of tech here - heart rate, GPS for outdoor activities (i.e. mountain biking - it pairs to Google Earth not only for satellite view of my route, but also uses elevation information to calculate elevation change and actual work load without having to have a smartphone with me during exercise), calorie burn estimates, programmable exercise routines (hiking, biking, rowing, running, swimming, you name it), and an outstanding app for compiling and tracking data. I can also change watch faces - digital, analog, styles, colors - so it's like umpteen-hundred watches in one.

I'm not a fitness-junkie-meathead (my physical stature will prove that to anyone here), but I did spend 6 months in PT back in 2008, learning how to walk again after a severe accident. Tracking my health is important to me, and like maintenance on my vehicles it makes it easier to identify anomalies as soon as they occur, and before they become catastrophic. I do 1,000 meters a day on my rowing machine. I finish, and my heart rate is 160. Every. Single. Time. Three minutes' cooldown, and I'm 120. Every. Single. Time. If that changes at all - if my peak is 180, or my cooldown is 130 - I know something is up, and I start figuring out what it is. Especially now, with this Corona crap going around, I want to keep a close eye on my health status.

As for actual watches? I have dad's old Timex, and HIS dad's old pocket watch. I need to look at it to see what it actually is, it's just been on display in my cabinet for years. I think I still have my old Timex, as well - a gift from dad, engraved for when I graduated college - in my dresser drawer.

"...1,000 meters a day on my rowing machine."

That's good exercise. I'm hoping this weather clears soon so I can get my kayak on the water. Usually I'll paddle a minimum of 3 miles while fishing the local 400 acre lake. My phone keeps track of my distance, track, calories burned, and elapsed time. You're correct, we can't slow-down aging, but can work at the physical (health) side of it. 👍

I haven't worn a watch for many many years. Don't see the need for it anymore with a cell phone. I received a Samsung gear watch on a promotion and thought I would try the watch wearing thing again. Didn't last very long. One less thing I have to worry about.

I guess I'm in the wrong part of the baby boomers.Watches are for time.phones are for calls.I would say paper is for letters, but I'm on the puter written to you all.Huh!
Just became a matter of convenience for me. Work is always dinging me so I was always grabbing the phone. I got use to that. Now phones are so advanced, all you have it so you can just "ask" it what time it is.

I have one watch that I bought on a cruise 25 years ago, it is a Seiko and it has worked great.
I have just started wearing a watch, because when I worked construction I used to beat the snot out of them and as an electrician it's not a good idea to wear any jewelry while working in a hot panel.

for work Bulova Precisionist for going out and a watch work gave to show a few.

Traser P66, rugged and simple. I wish they had made the automatic when I got mine but no need for another it works just fine.
I could not find a decent jeweler to replace the battery so I sent it to the manufacturer. For $200 the i got a new battery and the watch was reconditioned with new crystal, deep clean amd tritium vials (15) not to mention excellent customer service.

Question, how do normal watches hold up to recoil? I wore a G-shock when I was issued my M9, don't currently wear a watch when firing my XD-S.

This is why I wear a Timex . It takes a licking and keeps on ticking. 😜

I wear this one ---> https://www.ebay.com/itm/Timex-TW4B...153607&hash=item5482070fe1:g:eusAAOSwuAVWy2~p

I put this band on it to match ---> https://www.ebay.com/itm/17-22mm-Hi...inless-Steel-Mens-WatchBand-Long/401992723836

I have tried many different brands and Timex was the only brand that would keep working and not die on me in 6 months. I worked as a welder so I am sure that had a lot to do with it.

Yep.

I can no longer run (that accident in '08 - I have strength and coordination, but they don't work that fast anymore and I look like I should be wearing a helmet if I try and run), so the rower is the best way I've found year-round for a) no impact, b) outstanding cardio, and c) weight and muscle management. Eight and a half minutes start to finish, 200 calories burned, HR ramps up to a steady 160 about 3 minutes in. I do an interval set - 10 sets of 100M each, with :30 in between to rest.

Nice weather, I'm out on the mountain bike. 6.5 miles, 300' elevation change, 25 minutes, generally burns about 400 calories. HR will peak around 180, with a 3 minute cooldown to 120.

I may have to grow old...but I don't have to grow UP.

And granted, it's digital and not crystal/gear driven, but I've had zero issues with my Vivoactive and firing my XDs.

Yeah, I always liked the Expedition series. Seems like they're getting some negative reviews due to quality issues. Back in the day, they were the go-to watch. Thanks.
