The McCloskeys are confrontational people and also complete idiots. All they had to do was go inside their home and call 911. Had they done that the crowd of protestors would have walked on by their house and continued to the house of the Mayor of St. Louis where they were headed for a demonstration. Also, at no time did any protestor set foot on McCloskey property.
Having said that I do feel they should get their weapons back.
I really don't understand this hostility. The McCloskeys were just ordinary people suddenly confronted with a terrifying situation that could have gone a thousand different ways. As others pointed out, we were not there. We should not act like we know what they perceived and had reason to fear. We should give them the benefit of the doubt, not second guess them from the comfort of our couches after the fact.
All they had to do is call 911??? Have you already forgotten the context of those times? Numerous violent, rampaging riots were destroying areas of cities all over the country. Police were largely doing NOTHING! There was no confidence in law and order at all. There still isn't. Blithely suggesting they had nothing to fear, and that the police would just step in and handle it, is really unfair.
The mob was just headed for the Mayor's house??? How, exactly, would the McCloskeys know that? They had no way to know what the angry mob intended or would choose to do. They had every reason to fear the worst.
The "protestors" didn't go on their property??? Maybe that's because of the show of force the McCloskeys displayed. Maybe the "protestors" were restrained by those firearms. We can't know, of course, what would have happened. But we do know what didn't happen. The McCloskeys and their home were not harmed. I call that success.
Those of us who have more education in tactics and strategies pertaining to firearms and self defense may cringe at some of their behavior that day. So what? Not everyone can be expected to be some kind of high level operators. When confronted with a sudden, overwhelming danger they stood up to protect themselves, their home and their neighborhood like true Americans. I stand with them.
