10 Great Defense Loads for the 9 mm

Interesting read on the 10 great defense listings for the 9mm. In my opinion, the 9mm has come a very long way from the way it used to be years ago.

Thanks for the read Anni,
Fed. Punch is what use and loaded lately for CC. - Works good!
Haven't seen anything Magtech wise in months.

I was just going to ask about the Punch. Two boxes arrived at my door this afternoon. I hate to shoot any of it right now, but I'm going to manually cycle it just to make sure it feeds right in the VP9. I doubt I'll go carrying it yet. I generally use HST, but that Black Hills fluted stuff looks interesting.

Is funny!
The punch feeds fine in XDM & Hellcat. The other, Blackhills fluted ammo have a box on hand, but am saving for when have time to try.

For the win. I know some call this ammo a “boutique” round but it shoots very accurate for me and researching this round, it’s pretty potent. I also use this (Xtreme Hunter) in my 10mm. Lots of great results from other handgun hunters. Good post @Annihilator your right the 9mm offerings have come a long way.
Off topic and sorry for that, but heard there was a tornado in Al recently or maybe your neighboring state? Hope all is well!

Just over at the Federal site, and saw they have 20rnd boxes (2 per order limit), HST, 124gr, for $33.99 per box. After shipping costs, 2 bxs would be $79.98. Nope, not happening.
Yup, S&H needs to be added in there. Too many usually forget to add in S&H fees to actual cost. Unless there's free or discount shipping, I generally pass on online ammo and do locally with some exceptions. Generally 2 box limits locally, but price's usually less than online. Got same Fed. ammo for about $22. box here to try out. Haven't seen any ammo locally too overly priced, just rarely in stock. To me 45LC RN @ $49./50 box is still rough. So was a half 50 rnd box of .327 FM 100 grn RN @ $25. But, not many reloading supplies available most places seen either. For now, is what it is where ever?

I think all of my 9mm and even .380acp defense rounds come off that list - with the exception being some boxes of Hornady Critical Duty (versus Critical Defense) that I picked up a few months ago, mostly because they were out of Hornady XTP and Critical Defense on that trip to the LGS during the pandemic.

Come to think of it, here too!
Can be a weird time in some ways with ammo. Some would normally walk past, sometimes pick up now because of scarcity. Optimistically, the really nice thing in some ways for the most part, is trying out different brands and types that may not have otherwise tried?

Switched all my EDC ammo to Black Hills Honey Badger after some gel testing including various barriers. All of my EDC barrels are 3" or under. Went with the 60 grain for the .380 and the Subsonic 125 grain for the 9mm's which are both made for barrels 3" or less. The 9mm 100 grain +P loads were too hot and over penetrated even through the barriers tested. The SD Hollow Points I carried previously just had too many failures to expand in my tests which is why I switched. Test for yourself to see what your pistols perform best with as results may vary with different models. I shot several boxes of each until satisfied with the results before making the switch. Be sure to calibrate the gel to 44 degrees to ensure accuracy in your testing.

Edit to add last sentence.

Got a bunch of the Federal Punch, about 11 boxes of it for $15/box at Bass Pro about 2 months ago. Fired and cycled great in the gf's 365, and my 365 XL. I keep it loaded for both of our CCW's
