I recently received my prodigy and was extremely excited as it was my introduction to double stack 1911s. I didn’t expect it to run well until the break in period was complete, however I did notice the trigger was gritty and heavy, had a bad reset, the main spring is heavy, and it did not lock back with the 20 round magazine. I would get failures to feed, the round just sitting on the feed ramp.
To fix the failure to feed I made sure the magazines were in good shape, then I took apart everything and de burred and polished up all my internals. Especially the sear, and the disconnector, as well as where the slide makes contact with the disconnector.
During this process I lost my mainspring plunger, and temporarily put a little makeshift plunger in its place that I made out of a little acorn nut, and it works surprisingly well.
I was worried that after installing a lighter recoil spring to make the slide glide better, that my feeding issue would be consistent, as the slide wouldn’t have as much pressure to return the slide, but after polishing my feed ramp with some 600 grit sand paper, and polishing it with a dremel and some polishing compound, it’s no issue. Magazine spring for the 20 rounder is still TBD.
All in all this gun came with issues and it’s perfect for somebody who likes to gunsmith and tinker with their toys, I’ve greatly enjoyed the time I spend tuning it, and I highly recommend tuning it, rather than leaving it completely stock, yes it will void the warranty but it is well worth it if you have the tools and ability.
I just did a function check at the range, she shoots like butter, the slide is smooth, the return is right where I want it, and she eats everything I put through her. All in all, the prodigy is an excellent introduction to DIY tuning and learning the 2011 world for a lower price tag. Has anyone else had the same issues? And what upgrades or other things would be recommended?
