1911 for Home Defense — The Best Choice?

Yes Glocks are cheap but they work each and every time. Like I mentioned in an earlier post in 33 years of being a LEO and Firearms Instructor I have only seen 2 Glocks have to be sent back to them. In my opinion though there is no best caliber. SHOT Placement, period. You can have the best looking costliest biggest caliber gun but if you can't hit you target then at that point what caliber it is means nothing. Just my two cents worth.
 
Never owned a Glock. Shot a couple, didn't care for them. Buy/carry want you want.

I've gotten rid of my Glocks to return to all metal hammer fired. I never had issues with the Glocks, just couldn't adapt to them as I do with a 1911. I hope to never have to use deadly force (again). Over a period of 10 years I was involved in two OIS, both with homicide suspects and both at 5 yards or less. Each occurred in just seconds but seemed like slow motion. I went through emotional, physical, PTSD...the "what if's". All the confidence training, practice and high capacity pistols may not prepare you for what follows. Your mental state of mind may be more important than what you carry, before and after a self defense situation.

I carry what I am most familiar with, I've carried 1911 pistols for five decades. I know AZ statutes pertaining to self defense and shoot regularly focusing on 15 yards and less, based on statistics, my personal experiences, the experiences of others OIS and civilian shooting investigations.

Avoid conflict, but be prepared for violence. If I am ever involved in another shooting, temporarily losing my pistol would be the least of my worries. Losing everything we've worked for to obtain legal counsel and experience our corrupted legal system would bankrupt us.

If I'm in my own home, I'm already inherently "avoiding conflict." Luckily, I live in a state that still has the sanity to recognize that.

further, the police SEIZE our gun in a shooting event, and only from what i heard, (i have no absolute proof of LEO here in MY AREA), police mark up a gun that they seize, for evidence...

you think i'm gonna sacrifice an expensive 1911 that I OWN for something like that to happen to any of my 1911's...??

i'd rather it be any of my PERFECTLY GREAT GLOCKS, or Hellcat, over any 1911 that i own...HEAR ME NOW..????

hhhmmm. seems you are the one who either cant read or just doesnt pay attention, as i stated, both of those in the pic ARE 10 ROUND MAGS, so why would police seize them. the little P-10 isnt heavy at all. oh and at 60 i am getting older also yet still dont mind a solid gun in my hand.

DOES NOT MATTER THE GUN, the police seize the gun after a shooting. (as i said, many have said, but i do not know if it is done he, but i'll "surmise" it is as well) i ain't about to lose one of my expensive 1911's to an investigation and get it back all marked up.

i know what i read, i clearly know what i said.

I'm no longer a young man, but for me there really is no other choice than the tried and true 1911. I've been shooting and carrying the 1911 since I was a teenager. I've carried in combat which really taught me how well it works. I've carried one as a law enforcement officer. I've been carrying one most of my life and I know I can stake my life on it. Do I feel out gunned while carrying it? Absolutely not! Is it for everyone? No it is not. Just my personal view on the 1911. And no, it is not dead!!

Thank you sir. Like the thread said "home defense" it isn't one that I carry. I have one of the parkerized Springfield DYL Mil-Spec that I carry around here outdoors and a Ruger CMD for Winter coat, go to town carry. I go with what I know and the 1911 has been a good friend for around half a century.

I think you and I could be friends. ;)

I don't own an actual SA Mil-Spec (except for the CO2 gun), but I've been building what are essentially Mil-Specs myself for almost 40 years now. Here's a few of them, including one with a LW frame and one with a .22 top half.

For practical purposes for civilians carrying CCW or for home defense, he is correct. If I were still working the street I would want magazine capacity, but even so it is rarely a factor. All shooting is mental to some degree. And you just can't ignore the physics of .45 bullet vs. 9mm. Although I doubt that surgeons or medical examiners looking at the wounds would see much difference. He makes a good argument based on experience.
 
If it wasn't for my arthritic hands my daily carry would be a 1911 in 45ACP. Im able to shoot pretty well with the 45, just my hands won't let me practice as much as I need too. I don't feel under gunned with a 9mm but I carried a 1911 for many decades. Had considerable confidence in the 1911 & 45ACP.

Sooooo, if you're not fully familiar with your surroundings, especially your own house. I can't emphasize enough to train, train and train. And when you really think you got it down. Train some more. Is there a difference between "Protecting your home"? Or being fully engaged in eliminating the treat.
