My son is a deputy out in a semi-rural county where the cornfields get heavy, and from 11PM till about 2AM there are only 3 officers working and one of them goes in at 2AM when his 12-hour shift is over. The county next door to his has only 1 deputy working at night and occasionally they request mutual aid and his dept answers their calls until their deputy is free. I'm sure it's like this from one end of the country to the other. Bottom line is that as individuals we are responsible for our own safety.

I have a pit mix. Big, loveable dog who would rather give a lick than a bite. However, he happens to be very protective of his pack and has proven it once before when a strange dog wandered onto our property when he was out with my wife. My wife knows that if i am not home and she hears something in the middle of the night the first thing she is to do is release the ā€œmonsterā€ from his crate.

well i personally am glad, that of the many that are running for office here, are against defunding the police.

oh sure, there are some running, that WANT to defund or abolish them, but i think thier chances of getting a primary win are zilch to none.

This situation is one that sits in my mind. By the looks of the guy he doesnā€™t seem ā€œall thereā€. There was no mention he had a weapon of any sort (unless i missed that). So i ask myself, ā€œwhat would have been my threat assessment?ā€ If i was armed would i have shot him? Would i have been able to think that fast and make the right decision? These stories underscore the fact that i really do have the ability to end someoneā€™s life based upon a split second decision that i hope i never have to make. Thatā€™s some pretty heavy stuff to think about on a Saturday. Just my thoughts.

I agree with you mikep. Just because you could doesn't mean you should when it comes to taking someone's life. I imagine in the big cities with large numbers of homeless people wandering the streets the threat of entertaining unwanted visitors is skyrocketing. Some of these folks are criminals, some are insane, and some are criminally insane. Hard to know the difference.

That is absolutely true, but the fact is the wrong split second decision could cost you or your family their lives. That being the case, unwanted visitors will be dispatched if possible.
