28k in taxes

I’m carrying 180 & change into next year…

I’m lucky, our contract gives us really, REALLY good short time disability leave that worked in my favor when I did my hip this summer.
At some point my carpal tunnel will have to be dealt with. It’ll be 4 months of STD and eating ramen noodles with a 50k check at the end of it.

I have to burn all my sick time and after that it’s 70%, but I have banked sick time that makes up some of the missing 30% from before they took away our ability to roll sick time over to the next year. And the banked sick time is grandfathered in to the rate of pay when they took it. So it will never be 100%. Then it ends up a work comp deal and I’ll get it back after the lawyer is done. I’ll have to pay for my insurance and retirement while I’m on STD out of my pocket.

my 2nd to last company i worked for right out of the navy was an army contractor for stuff they needed done
we had a weird sick day thing and weird PTO earned
1st 3 months 8 hrs per pay period, we were paid every other week
3rd month and a Day it jumped to 12 hrs pto, stayed there until end of year one then jumped to 16.
we had every gov holiday off and if the gov handlers took a special day as granted by the commander, we got paid full rate for being off and didnt loose any pto.
at end of year you could roll pto over to no exceed the equivalent of 90 days off, just like the military. I never had that problem as i believed in maximum liberty. i would take 3 days on wed and enjoy 5 off.

if you had to be off for a surgery, you got full pay, no overtime. up to 3 weeks
after 3 it dropped to 75% of pay. if you lost work for over a month we had the aflflac thing that picked up the difference. no earned PTO. 100% dental and Vision and this included your spouse.
they also paid my tricare annual fee and any deductibles, which really saved them tons of money.

when we traveled abroad, we earned 2x PTO plus 2x base rate of pay
and many countries we had to visit, the company would double our life insurance for the entire away period.
we were salaried based on 40 hrs per week, so it was easy for the gov to handle with our hours turned in.

after 3 years i never worked a 40 hr week. most were 50 or more, mainly because we did lots of thursday through sunday away visits to army units in the US and 3 to 4 week to overseas units.
The gov handlers and the contract had very strict after action report deadlines. so if we came home on sunday, then we had to work monday to get the after action reports filed to our handlers, of course that was a full 8 hr day. And tuesday you were resetting the gear and or getting ready to leave again weds or thursday.

this i how backwards the contract was; WE/I would sit in airports for hours very often and could fill out all the action reports, but we were restricted from writing them on unsecured computers ( in our possession and not tied to internet)
but when we got back to office the very same computer plugged into a secure server???? so we wrote them any way sans the pictures.

so it worked out to 6 days a week at a minimum.
when we travled, our "AT WORK" time started as soon as we arrived at the airport and the clock rolled until we arrived back at our home.

gov had to break our salary into hourly rates so they could pay us 1.5 OT for every thing over 40
come tax time it killed us. we lived in alabama and they had a state tax, which was not to bad
but fed tax killed us. we had all the ira's and work 401ks maxed out of contributions. in fact all my navy retainer went to investments in retirement accounts and we lived in a modest house and saved and saved. but still had nice things and took nice vacations.
so after 3 years I retired for good
when I was hired, travel was to be no more than 7 days per month... in real life i was home 7 days a month, it was worse than active duty

We specifically can't use/have AFLAC. If we do, that amount will be deducted from my pay.

that is suckkkkky
they paid our aflac stuff.
we were spoiled and i know why people only stayed 3 years
it was worse than active duty, being away all the time, but we got keep air miles so we flew 1st class within a few months of the deltas reset every year. this was the huge driver for me to walk away after 3.

and they matched our 401k dollar for dollar up to the max allowed by law. and being contractors we were vested at the get go to comply with some program to protect contractors...many faces stayed the same, but contract companies changed, so this protected your 401k.

They go out of their way to dissuade us from going on STD.
