5 Good .22 Magnum Loads

There are some suggestions in the article I've never heard of but now want to try. I love this caliber. I probably will never be able to find the rounds until ammo comes back, but I have plenty of Winchester and regular CCI until that happens.

I don't have any .22 WMR rifles, buy I have several handguns chambered in .22 Magnum. The S&W revolvers can fire anything, but the semi-autos are pretty ammo-picky. The Winchester Super X may do well in rifles, but neither my Rock Island XT22M or the Kel-Tec PMR30 run it reliably. There are even some CCI loads that don't run very well through the XT22M. The Armscor 40 gr Standard Velocity has run flawlessly through everything, and it usually sells for around half the price of other brands (when you can find it).

I’ve always liked Maxi-Mags in rifles (I have an Anschutz 1761); fly well, hit hard. Winchester Dyna-Point has also done well for me.

In my snubs...the Critical Defense has proven to be reliable & accurate, as well as the Winchester PDX1 loading. Tried the .22WMR Gold Dot, but...disappointing accuracy.

I'm really taking a liking to the .22 magnum, got a RIA revolver a few weeks back that takes that round.

I've been trying to find a Rock Island AL22M, but haven't had any luck in stores or online. My S&W 351C and 351PD are excellent concealed and pocket carry options, but I don't own a full-sized double-action .22 WMR revolver. I have a Heritage Rough Rider with the .22 WMR cylinder, but that is my plinking gun and it's just not economical to run .22 WMR when .22 LR is an option. .22 WMR is still available in my area for about half the price of 38 Special, so I'd gladly run it in a full-sized defensive revolver like the AL22M.

I'm on the RIA T&E team so I get firearms sent to me from them all the time. It's a good solid revolver. I got their AL9 as well and that thing is sweet, takes 9mm, which I have thousands of rounds of. Only drawback is the moon clips. It will work without the moon clips, but then you have to remove every spent case one by one with a stick or something.

I applaud RIA for thinking outside the box on some of their designs. The XT22M is one of my favorite range toys, but I'm sure it sounded crazy the first time someone suggested putting a Beretta 92 style open slide on a 1911 frame and chambering it in .22 WMR. Like you, I'm not a fan of moon clips. One of the things that always drew me to rimfire revolvers was the added capacity and cheaper ammo. With 9mm being difficult to find in-stock for under $30 a box, I'm just not too interested in a 9mm revolver at this time. That might change eventually, but right now the AL22M is the one I'm after.

I've been running the Hornady Critical Defense in my 351's for awhile. I ran a box of the Gold Dot through the 351C when I got the gun. I had accuracy issue as well, but assumed it was just me getting used to the gun. I almost never found Gold Dot in stores, even before the shortage, so the vast majority of my .22 WMR shooting has been done with the Critical Defense or various CCI loads.

I load all my 9mm now for about 8 cents a round, hard to find even .22 at that price. I do like the .22 mag, the recoil is very manageable. My wife is considering using that for her daily carry, she doesn't care for heavy recoil.
