On April 18, 1775, Paul Revere and William Dawes set out to warn militias across Massachusetts of approaching British troops.
The troops were heading to Concord to confiscate weapons.
Revere and Dawes arrived in Lexington around midnight.
Then, joined by Samuel Prescott, they continued towards Concord.
Revere and Dawes were captured by the British on the way, but Prescott escaped and alerted Concord."
As John Adams reminded us:
Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.
