A Sign that It's Time to Buy A New 1911?

Last Year I took a chance on ordering ammo from Sportsman's Guide. Buyers would pay current prices for ammo, but the product wouldn't ship until it was in stock. I ordered 800 rounds of Sellier & Bellot 230 gr .45 ACP FMJ rounds, with an ammo can, for just over $0.32 per round ($16.50 per 50 round box) total cost with shipping. It took over a year, but the ammo finally arrived at the promised price.

I have been on the fence about trading up to a nice 1911 for awhile. I had planned on getting one of the SA Range Officer models, but they appear to have gone out of production. I'm going to assume that there is no better time to pick up a new 1911 than right after a bunch of affordable .45 ACP arrives at your door. What do you guys think are my chances of finding a leftover RO model at a decent price? I'm also open to other suggestions, with a few personal qualifiers.

I know that many shooters love their Ronin 1911's and will try to steer me that way. It is just a personal taste issue with me, but I do not like two-tone guns. I'll put up with it in a lower-end polymer pistol, but I can't justify spending $1000 on a gun and not getting exactly what I want. My first 1911 was a G.I. style Remington R1, which is a fine pistol, but it prevents me from needing another mil-spec or G.I. model. If I can't find any RO models, what other 1911's in the $750-$1,000 range have you guys personally had good experiences with?

Personally, even though I had bad luck with my Kimber Micro 9, I would recommend a Kimber Custom II Duel Tone, I have 2 of these right now, full size Custom II in 9mm, and the commander size Pro Carry II in .45, both shoot great, no issues with either one.

While I do love my Ronin, Initially I wasn't in love with the Two-Tone look, but it did really grow on me. So I feel you on that. No truer words can be spoken than "I can't justify spending $1000 on a gun and not getting exactly what I want."

I think RIA and Kimber have a bunch of 1911's in that price range, including an all stainless one, and some other variations. I cannot speak to their shooting, but i've not heard anything bad about Kimber. I've just found personally that Springfield offered a bit more features for a better price point. RIA always seems to have nothing less than beyond solid reviews.

Kudos on that ammo score though. I've paid no more but also no less, than $0.60/rd for .45 ACP unfortunately.

A few of the Kimbers have caught my eye recently. I've never owned a Kimber, and I've never known if the Kimber-bashing on this forum is tongue-in-cheek or serious. My best case scenario is to find a Springfield RO locally that I can trade some of my lesser-used firearms towards. If that's not an option, a few of my favorite online sellers (Kentucky Gun Co. and Tombstone Tactical) have been selling the Kimbers at attractive prices.

My only issue was the Micro 9, guide rod bent and there CS wouldn’t replace it, my 2 Kimber 1911’s run perfect, my RO Operator is a real nice pistol also, it was my first 9mm 1911. Now I did stumble on getting my Sig 1911, it was a discontinued model from 2020, but it has all the bells and whistles you want, got it for 899.00 at my shop. I would shop around, you just might find the RO, one thing I will say, 1911’s are very addictive.

I doubt you'll have a lot of luck with any reasonably priced pistol right now but for me a good sign that ita time to buy a new 1911 is if the day ends in a "y." I say go get what you want and enjoy some good shooting. Kimber gets a lot of trash talk but I've owned 2 that have shot fantastic.

i have a very small "collection" of 1911's. from G'ment mil spec, to the Ronin, to SS, to no roll marks, you name it, all metal.

the way i "see it", is that they all look good to me, shoot incredibly well, and someday, that 2 tone may be discontinued, making it (perhaps) desirable to others, come time for me to sell.

I too had the R-1911, and sold it to my buddy, in it's place, i have 3 more (different makes).

when i first started in this sport/hobby, i HAD the chance to buy the SS CZ 75B, but i was new, and the price was like $200 more than the blued one, so i went blue...

now, that SS CZ 75 B has been discontinued, and i had seen USED ones go for hundreds of dollar's more than what i could have gotten one for originally.

so for me, if the LGS has a 1911, that appeals to me, and right now, that new Springfield Armory Emissary does....

I WILL BUY one...if not 2......and save one, keep it, NIB, for a possible future sale and recoup the purchase for the both of them....with a nice profit to boot.....!!!!!!

Good morning. Sun is up. Thats a good reason to purchase a 1911. I love shooting 45acp and 44 magnum so much. I guess its because growing up I always heard 45 will kick you to the ground when you shoot one. Found out at a young age that wasnt true and 1911s are truly amazing And at the ripe old age of 12 a gentleman at the range my brother and I were at watched me shoot our Colt Diamondback. Asked if I would like to shoot his single action 44. For the first two rounds he stood over me in case the recoil was too much. The next four he stood there and watched my enjoyment. It was of course a few years before I owned my first of either but truly enjoy both calibers to this day . I will say I think the only downside to most any 1911 is wanting to do every mod under the sun. I have heard for years that most parts that say drop in means drop in to your local gunsmith and have him install the part. So wmg1299 a new 1911 will be the best way to check out all that new ammo. Best wishes.

My “sign that it’s time to buy a new 1911” is usually the notification on my phone from my bank, that my latest paycheck was deposited….

I wonder if there’s a way my check could just be auto-divided and sent direct to the grocery store, Sheetz gas station, and my LGS ? That’d cut out the middleman (me). I never get to keep any of it anyway…

Anytime is a good time to get a 1911…..😬😬😬😬

For my latest sign, I received an email showing me a picture and description of the new Emmisary that Springfield released. I saw that beauty and said to my wife, "Now that I will have to have", shortly after which I noticed my wallet and credit cards were missing and the log in at the bank had changed. Coincidence ? Lol

Don't currently own a 1911 but have several on my radar, both 45 and 10mm, when the price is right.

Edit- Didn't realize it because I don't keep track but when I hit "post reply", my rank changed to Custom. I should buy now to celebrate. Please don't tell my wife!
