Proud to say I was a MWD (Military Working Dog) handler/training in the Army for 10 years. This was in 1985-95, (then as a civilian LEO for over 20 years after military service), when I joined, we were still using the MWD manuals from the Vietnam era. Was 1 of 12 members of a committee that completely rewrote and updated all the MWD manuals used today. Great times... great job.

Our Collie, "my first dog", served until '45 when he was returned to us. I think he was assigned to an internment camp because one of my first memories was of sitting on the front step and asking my dad why "Boy" got his hackles up every time Mr. Kawauchi walked by. I was 3. Dad gave me a little lesson on the war recently concluded. I still have his discharge paper from the Army Quartermaster.

also Ft. Robinson in Nebraska is a wonderful visit, anything around San Antonio as Airforce is the provider of K9 units to most military branches. Because of the war on Terror the War Dog Machine is huge business. And rehoming the retired dogs is a needful project. Project k9 hero and Mission k9 rescue and the 37th training wing program.
The dogs range from detection specialists to full on elite warriors. The elite dogs come from very much watched bloodlines and require know how and plan and facilities to support what they do.

Oakley is a beautiful dog
Oakley says thanks. His dad is pure Belgian Malinois, mom is a mix of Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, and German Shepherd. He is super intelligent, loving, loyal, and lets us know if anything suspicious is going on outside the house.

I have a great friend in law enforcement that is a K9 officer for 25+ yrs.
Great, loyal partners they are.
He has lost several in the line of duty to injury or disease over the years.
