Are These Cartridges About To Go Obsolete?

Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for these cartridges.

It’s hard to explain why some rounds thrive while others fade away. While all of these rounds can still be purchased from Underwood Ammo, they’re nearly impossible to find on most gun-store shelves.

I passed on the 460R although I could've converted a g21, but held off. Also passed on the 400cor-bon and went 10mm. Never thought the 45gap was worth the effort as 45acp is slow enough as it is. I came close too buying a grizzley in 45wm in '86 (give or take a year), but passed on that as already having a 629 in 44mag. Still, an interesting article.

I was VERY interested in the .45 GAP for a while about 20 years ago. The slightly smaller 1911-ish frame just fit my hand THAT much better than a "real" 1911. The downside to that gun was it required so many unique proprietary parts to work--trigger, extractor, slide, etc. One of my favorite things about the 1911 is the commonality of spare parts. I don't think any 1911 will ever be "orphaned," no matter who made it or when.

I think you could add the .30 Super Carry to the list. Its not so much obsolete as its a "never was".
I shot a .460 Roland once. Impressive cartridge, but at the time was too scarce to draw any real attention.
I was next to a guy at the range one time who was shooting a L.A.R. Grizzly in .45 Win Mag. The ejected cases where bouncing off the ceiling hard and going every which a way. People all around him were duckin' for cover.

 I swear this is standard fair for writers to write about when they are having writers block. JMHO If ya got nutin to say, shut up.

"I don't see any .401 Winchester in their lineup. Probably really obsolete."
Same for 401 power mag. :ROFLMAO: Maybe next time someone can write about the "401 Curse."
How many times/years have we listened to the 16 gauge is dying or dead? Sure, is taking its sweet time about it.

Thanks for posting even if I am a grumpy old bast...........

Who made a .45GAP 1911 in a smaller frame?

first, frankly, i could care less about some cartridges going away...personally i feel there are just too many, spreading the ammo making companies to "short us for ammo supplies, " one over another.

next, the 45 GAP, being a Glock round? makes sense now to me how the gunsmith at my club said, "if you ever get Glock brass mixed in with your other 45 (ACP) brass, you are going to have a hell of a time reloading", as that Glock brass slightly shorter than ACP, and uses a small primer (even as some ACP brands use)..

little did the gunsmith know at the time, i always separate my LPP and SPP 45 ACP, so i would have caught the SPP 45 brass..

so that's a cartridge that can go..."bye-bye"....

i think it's time to "clean up all the excess not as popular anymore" ammo.

now, let the raging debates start.....

I THINK it was a Springfield Armory, and I THINK that frame lives on today in one of their 9mm guns. EMP or something like that? My old brain is already too full of interesting and cool trivia to remember all the dozens (scores? hundreds?) of SA 1911 variants. ;)
SA never made a .45GAP EMP…it was mentioned once in a magazine article that they were going to, but it was never actually put in production.

Para may have made one, but…I thought that was just a standard 1911 chambered in GAP.

Maybe it wasn't a SA, then. I DO know I actually handled one at a gun show over a decade ago, which is where/when/how I learned that my hand liked that frame better than a standard 1911 frame.

Sorry Old-Me couldn't help myself. ;) :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: Okay I'll go lay down and take a nap now.

I shot and almost bought one of the LAR Grizzly Win Mag pistols, nice gun, it came with a .357mag conversion also, couldn’t agree on price

The 400 Corbon and 45 GAP really don't seem to have much purpose. The 10mm already does what the 400 Corbon does, and arguably better since it doesn't rely on an overly fat case. And 45 GAP = 45 ACP short. Which is neat but...I can't say that does me much good since I'm perfectly fine with the profile of most 45 ACP pistols.

The rest seem to have their own niche that (to my knowledge at least) isn't already over-lapped with another cartridge that does the same thing in a package with a better profile.

I've got a pistol that I intend to convert to a 460 Rowland. My Taurus 44 is ridiculous amounts of fun to shoot. So why wouldn't I want 44 mag power in a semi-auto pistol?

I can only imagine the same would hold true for a 40 Super.
