My son had an appendectomy last year. We told the Dr’s we preferred they not use fentanyl. They did anyway.
He stopped breathing and the ER ICU team had to come in. He was in ICU for 2 days.

No I don't carry Narcan. Nor do I carry a bug, extra knives, psk, flashlight, or even a cell phone when the Mrs. kids, and grandkids let me get away from the damn thing. ME.DOC policy is/was apply restraints then Narcan. Not uncommon for people to wake up fighting. Be forewarned, it's not like they will stretch & yawn from a peaceful slumber.
 
Question…what happens if you give Narcan to someone who is not on fentanyl? Say someone has a stroke, or a diabetic seizure, or just collapses? I am supposed to pay Amazon $44 for two doses and risk financial liability for some dirtbag. Not gonna happen. If given to me, I might carry it in my car, but only use it for someone I know. I imagine the number of “non users” is tiny compared to those who are abusers. If you take an illegal drug, not really knowing what is in it, you are on your own, as far as I am concerned. I pass a billboard showing a woman, with her statement being “I carry for my family”, makes me wonder what her family is like.
 
I’d I carried narcan in a non LE role I would reserve it for my family or friend only.

People get a little to into things when something hits the news. Like the number of people wanting to run out and have needle compression lists in their med gear is stupid and ill advised for anyone that’s not a trained certified medical professional. I have seen ER physicians and nurses Jack that up so some random guy with no experience if gonna have it down. No thank you.

I get having awareness on things but as joe retired guy when I am off duty I am off duty!

If you were to administer Narcan to someone who doesn’t need it, then it won’t hurt them. It works by binding to the narcotic receptors, and wouldn’t block anything if the substance is not in the bloodstream.
Also, the amount of Narcan that a single dose delivers is not much. True uncut Fentanyl overdoses do not respond adequately to just one dose of Narcan, it usually takes several doses, then later it will take more, as the Fentanyl will last longer than the Narcan.
I use Fentanyl on a regular basis to assist in sedation, and pain control, but the concentration is smaller, and the patients are monitored.

If you're not an illicit drug user , or LEO or EMS dealing with illicit drug users , the odds of regular square citizens OD'ing is akin to being struck by lightning with a winning lottery ticket in your pocket ..

The small spark of truth is about illicit drug users who think they're illicitly using something else , not knowing their cocaine, ecstacy, benzos , meth , etc happens to be laced with Fentynal . Still illegal drug users meeting their demise through self initiated misadventure.

That’s how my brother died.

I’m not a drug user or an advocate but I don’t think someone doing a line of coke deserves to die. Many drugs are illicit simply because the government wants it that way, meanwhile some of the most dangerous drugs are perfectly legal.
 
I wonder how much Narcan NY, SF, LA, or Chitown go through in a year. Fentanyl is mixed into so many other illegal drugs, anyone who is a user is liable to be impacted. Lots of users, lots of Narcan. My wife got a prescription for Vicodin for a bad back and the doc also sent in a second prescription for Narcan. Just in case, he said!

For years the idea was not to go after the pushers, but the big guys in the drug trade. I always thought that giving the pushers enough of their own to get hooked, then jailing them to go thru withdrawal was a nice idea.
