Backyard Visitor

Oaktree45

Custom
When we bought a house in a new subdivision in a rural area 43 years ago we were pretty much surrounded by woods. Fast forward to present day and the amount of wooded areas has diminished considerably and there are many more subdivisions. Our house is located almost in the middle of our subdivision so when I began finding deer poop in my yard I was surprised. Also my bird feeder was being emptied at night regularly. My curiosity finally got the best of me and I ordered a cheap Trail Camera.

When I ordered the camera I began putting out some bird seed on a plate hoping to make her a regular visitor so I could get some pics and it worked. On the plate I put bird seed, sunflower seed, grapes, fresh blackberries, and two baby carrot sticks. She’s a very smart deer and doesn’t eat the carrots. I don’t like raw carrots either. Now I know what direction she is coming from. I forgot to set the date and time on the camera. She is hopping at a minimum of 5 fences to get into my yard.

My $36 trail cam worked much better than I expected.

Great pictures and it looks like you’ve fattened her up. Good job, they are prettier alive then they are dead.

When I lived in Kentucky, my next door neighbor placed a salt lick in their back yard for the deer. An older doe would bring her fawns to visit that salt lick each year. It was wonderful to sit out back and watch her show off the little ones.

Very cool
My CO vacation to some relatives yielded some similar experiences.
I loved to see mule deer & fawns every morning on vacation in their back yard.

Adorable little babies. I will never forget years ago my then wife and I got a wildlife rescue call on a dear that was hit by a car, the report came in it was still moving. When we arrived on scene we found the dear dead but what was moving was the baby inside her. I proceeded to cut the mother open and pulled out the very much alive and unhurt baby. She survived and was placed with a rehabilitation group that had dozens of baby dear. We used to go and visit and the baby would always come up to me and cry when we left.
Very rewarding.

That's a great story. Thanks for sharing it.

Great pictures. My uncle wondered why his feeders were all getting emptied each night, including his hummingbird feeders. Ended up being a couple bears. He was not nearly as happy as you lol.

They both had a deft touch at shaking the feeders empty then licking up stuff

Where we live now, it’s kind of in town, but my back yard is huge, we have deer, rabbits, ground hogs and what my wife calls Speedy, a little chimp monk, here is a pic of a new born baby deer the mother bedded down one afternoon while she left to eat, this little one was bedded all day, didn’t move, and momma came at dusk and got it.

Same thing happened on our vacation to CO.
Black bears came in at night to the hummingbird feeders to raid them. Most feeders got broken apart.

Absolutely they are prettier alive than they are dead. But they taste so good. When my twins were 3 we watched BAMBI a lot. So when a friend introduced me to deer hunting my wife one day after the movie asked the boys if they wanted me to go deer hunting. In stereo from both boys NO! Which was countered with what about the deer that tried to beat up BAMBI and steal Faline. Again in stereo yes Dad shoot him twice. Turns out over the years that bad boy was harvested numerous times. When my twins were at The United States Air Force Academy the deer would come down out of the woods and graze near the field house and tennis courts. Very enjoyable to watch.

I had a doe jump my chain link fence and then just stand there looking at me a week or so ago. I live kinda out of the way though. I work in suburbia and those neighborhoods are filled with meat, I mean deer as well. They got no place to go.

My pics were from the area around the AF Academy in CO Springs. Family lives in the area

Have whitetails run through my yard all the time. Especially in the winter. Had a 30 foot cedar that they chewed from the bottom up to as high as they could reach each winter. :)
