Four .223 Remington rifles with different barrel lengths were shot extensively to
determine what powders with different burn rates had on velocity and ballistic uniformity.

I have read that in the 223, a barrel of 26 inches gains velocity as it is cut down to 20 inches. Then velocity is lost is between 15 and 50 fps per inch of reduction. Velocity losses get exponentially greater from that point downward.
I am a fan of the 18 inch barrel. After all, the AR and the 223/5.56 is not known for nor was it designed for long range work. I believe the goal was 600 meters or thereabout.

Hence, the advent of the 6mm ARC.
