Barrel Nut Wrench

You could, or get the BCM wrench…..hmmm it’s almost like BCM designed the Saint Barrel nut 😉. Remember BCM was a close original partner with Springfield on the Saints.
trouble with strap wrench is that it will slip, SA tightens the barrel nuts to the top edge of torque. They Do not use locktight, but people swear they do. Then on reassembly it will be harder to time the nut with the handguard With a strap wrench.

They both have the slots, but the difference is that Springfield locks the handguard via screws that go around the nut.

You were dead right XDMAN. Got the wrench today, worked great. Next time I see the BCM guys at our gun club I'll ask them why I was given faulty info. Thanks again for your help.

Now in all honesty they may not have known, just like most Springfield customer service reps would not know. I just happen to know the history of the Saint development, involved with the original media release of the Saint and most likely the first one outside of the factory to take one apart to break one. So I just happen to have a bunch of useless knowledge that can bore people at parties. Buuuut I will say this thread and ones like it are the reason for the forum…to help each other. Glad you were able to get fixed up.

I did write to BCM and I got this reply. Wanted to share it with you guys. Show is curious that the SA barrel is the exact same profile as the BCM.

I did contact BCM on this issue. I wanted to share their response with you guys. Sure is curious that the SA barrel nut is the exact same profile as the BCM.

We do not make the barrel nuts for Springfield’s handguards. We do not have any direct experience with Springfield’s handguard or the barrel nut they use so we cannot state what barrel nut wrench would work with their barrel nut to remove it properly without damaging the barrel nut or other components.

The development of the initial Springfield SAINT was a collaboration with BCM however, the original SAINT only used our BCM Stock, pistol grip, and polymer handguard. The SAINT did not use our BCM KMR, MCMR, or QRF aluminum handguards or KMR Barrel Nuts.

Hopefully this helps.

Hi all...new member and recently bought a Saint Edge (STE916556B) that's been a joy to use.

I'd like to get into collecting the tools necessary to service/mod the Edge and maybe start building my own AR's as a hobby, but this thread about the barrel nut wrench has me confused. I went to the BCM site linked in an earlier posting to buy the correct barrel nut wrench, but I'm still confused about which one it is.

For the Edge, exactly which barrel nut wrench do I need? Any other tools you recommend would also be appreciated.

Thank you

First welcome to the forum from Kentucky.

@xdman will be a great resource to help you as well as many other members who have already done what you want to do.

You can also (call) Springfield Armory customer service and ask questions.
(800) 680-6866 they are also a great resource.

The Saint Edge AR Platform is the top of the line Springfield AR “my opinion”
As I owned at one time the pistol version and it was a hammer.

Thank you, Keystone.

I agree with you about the Edge. I've owned various pistols & rifles for decades, but the Edge is my first AR, so I did a lot of research/reading/reviews to learn more about AR's before I started collecting my choices to parse.

I didn't even know SA made them, but I was also shopping for a 1911 .45 and discovered their AR's then. So I bought a Ronin .45 and the Edge. The Ronin is a fantastic pistol, by the way...they homerun'd that one, just like they did the Edge.

There's a lot of fine AR's out there...but when I saw the Edge, I knew she was something special and was the 'one' I wanted. She's a beautiful rifle and was a joy to use on her first outing a few weeks ago. Not a single glitch and rock solid. Plus, the billet lower, angled handguard, premium parts, and knowing SA's high-quality from their guns I already owned were selling points for me.

Now the bug has bitten me to mod & maintain her, as well as build AR's for fun, because there's so many resources & parts available and it's such a versatile platform that's fun to work with. But I'm little lost on tools needed and trying to learn more through the SA forum and other sites.

I don't think my wallet will like it, though, considering how much I bled it already, buying various tools, scopes, cases, and other stuff that goes along with new firearms. Oh well...can't take it with you, so may as well enjoy it.

Can you post a picture of the barrel nut on your gun? That'll help me to help you.

Hi Texas...sorry for the delay getting back to you. Didn't see your posting till tonight. Here are the photos of the barrel nut you asked for, from all four sides, to advise me on the proper barrel wrench needed for my Saint Edge. There's four U-shaped notches around its circumference, spaced 90 degrees apart. One is hidden under the gas tube.

This is my first AR & first time taking her apart (aside from cleaning after range time), so any words of wisdom, help, or advice is appreciated. I'd also like to collect the proper tools to maintain & mod her downstream, so any recommendations you have for quality tools and where to get them is appreciated. I have decades of normal tools collected to work on my cars, computers & just about anything else, but only have a faint idea of what I need for this rifle & building my own as a hobby later on.

Thank you

You're able to use 2 styles of barrel nut wrenches with that. There is 1 that slips into the notches (I think there are 4) and a pin style that fits into the holes (just 1 hole). The 1 that fits into the slots looks similar to a buffer tube wrench (probably not the same size?).

Thanks, Texas...I didn't know the holes were for that purpose. Learning, learning, learning, as I go along.

I also have a new Edge. Could you share the link to the BCM barrel nut wrench you bought?

Here's what you'll need. The action rod isn't required, but helps on possibly keeping from twisting/torquing the upper receiver. Bev blocks (Magpul) would be a second choice.

Also putting some aluminum anti-sieze on the receiver threads isn't required for assembly, but isn't hurtful either. Remember you need a torque wrench (is required), unless you have a good way to know your limits.

Thanks...I missed that link earlier. I have torque wrenches, so that nut wrench will work great. I'll check out the action rod & Bev blocks when I hit BCM, Palmetto, etc, to bleed my wallet this weekend.

Crazy that the barrel nut wrench doubles as a castle nut wrench also. Nice 2 for.
