bedding a gi 1903 springfield

I have never bedded a 1903 specific, but I dont see why it would be any different from any other rifle. Is this something you want to do yourself or want a gunsmith to do? A converted sporter or military stock? What are your goals and why do you want this to be done?

in a new stock, have been told Townsnd Wheelan wrote a article on

Welcome to the forum Rocky.
Was the new stock made for your action? If not I would suggest you speak with a gunsmith before you try this, if not done correctly you will crack the stock after just a couple shots. The video supplied by XDMAN shows the basics.
can you post some pictures of the action and the stock?
Here is an interesting YouTube video.

As with most “but not all” the recoil lug is a bar type not a round post that fits in a hole. This bar fits in a slot in the stock, as you can see in the video this has a bolt that screws up through the stock into the bar which is rare as most stock makers use bolts only in round recoil lugs.
The location of the 1903 recoil lug into the slot in the stock and the hole for the bolt dictates how the the rest of the action beds into the stock correctly. Remember gun stocks from that era are custom made to fit individual actions your “new” stock has most likely been made using a CNC process programmed using reverse engineering. The bottom line it will require customization to fit.

hi guys , i bought a CMP 03. it has a rotten stock and would like to replace
with a new stock and bed the action with match shooting , I would prefer
to bed it the old USMC way, but am open to options based on advice.
many thanks, rocky

So I missed that you don’t have a new stock yet, I would contact Altamont to see what they offer for your 1903 action.

hi , seeking a straight stock with finger grooves, would like to build a replicate
of a late 1920's USMC banana war 1903 .
