Best Ammo to use for....

Hey Y'all,
New to the AR 15 .556 realm and I absolutely love it!
Have a SA Saint Victor 1:8 twist. Can y'all give me some advice to the best ammo for this firearm? I understand 62 or 77 grain, any preference on brand, type etc.

My Voodoo Witch Doctor has 1:8 twist which means it will shoot heavier bullets, but it still eats the cheap .55 grains like candy. No real noticeable difference in POI either.

I have .62 grain green tip penetrators from Lake City, which are expensive, but I'm buying some .55 grain stuff for plinking.
 
Right now I'd say whatever you can find. 5.56/.223 are hard to come by. I don't think brand is going to be an issue. I've used Aguila, Federal, Winchester, and Lake City through mine and it made no difference. Regular FMJ is going to be fine for plinking. There a re of course hunting rounds but I have no recommedations there. I doubt you'll get a whole lot out of the match level ammunition with a factory rifle. I suppose I'd just get a good batch of 62gr ball, maybe some M855 if you can find it.

That right there is the truth.

In general, my answer is... it depends.

Depends on the purpose (home defense? Plinking only?) and what’s available. I shoot 55 gr in my Saint. But I’d also shoot 62 gr if I found some and saw that POI was nearly identical.

This considering since it will likely be cheaper & more available due to the current events. Not just for plinking but more importantly for drills.

55 gr is perfectly fine for delf defense. The whole Vietnam War was fought using 55 gr. M193.

Out of 1:14 twist barrels, at that...barely stabilized the bullet.

And, yes, with the 1:8 twist, you can pretty much run anything; the super-heavy 80+gr bullets may not give very good accuracy, though. Super light-sub 40gr-may not run well, either.

Thx, home/self defense. And fun, it will not be my first and only AR. And probably sooner rather than later IF the new regime wins. :(

Magpul makes a pretty decent bipod for around $100.00 or you can also pickup a much cheaper UTG bipod on amazon in the $30.00 range that will hold up just fine for range plinking.
 
Depends on how you want to attach it? Here's a few and the magpul is bottom left facing up.
