STACCATO XC and BLAZER brass case 115g fmj (bought 1k rounds at big box sporting goods store)

Greetings friends,
Went to the range today for my Friday fix. Brought along the Staccato XC as well as 150 rounds of Blazer 9mm 115g fmj.
the session started off great as expected. The thing about the XC is it loves to make me shoot fast, while I do enjoy shooting fast, the down side is 150 rounds last about 25 minutes if you are running 20 round mags. And shooting 20 rounds fast, my accuracy fades around number 9 or 10. Therefore I typically load 5 rounds, shoot and then regroup while loading another 5 rounds.

That being said, I made it through 100 rounds of pure satisfying goodness, sent a fresh target and shot five very accurate shots. I loaded another mag, aimed and fired. The shot let out a "DULL" thud and I never saw impact on target. I looked at pistol and it had not returned fully in to battery.

I pressed mag release and the magazine, empty case as well as the next round dropped to the bench. A good amount of unburnt powder came out with them. There was also quite a bit of unburnt powder covering the inside of slide at ejection port. Upon inspection, I could see the back of the projectile through ejection port. The bullet made it about 1" into barrel. I packed up, went into front of store and we tapped the bullet out with squib rod. Zero deformation or rifling marks on the bullet.

This was my first experience with a squib,
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Forgot to mention, 3800 rounds on pistol 90% of them were this ammo. Zero problems until this.

My first thought is I'm glad you were paying attention. This could have ended very badly. My second thought is damn. I shoot a lot of Blazer Brass, but only 124 gr. I guess it can happen with any brand, but......

I think the longer you shoot, the more the odds are that it will happen to you. I shot a lot of blazer without any issues too, who knows when it might happen.
I'm certain this is true statistically. But I am no "occasional shooter" by any measure and I have literally only ever, in my life, had a squib one time and that was with factory reloads. The only other issue I had was another attempt at using reloads in an auto and it was a dead primer. So not a squib, but I still had to take my gun apart and perform surgery to get the round out of the chamber. I've literally never had a bad round that wasn't a reload, knock on wood. Over what has to be 100s of thousands of rounds. Lucky I suppose.

I am one of the Round Count recording guys from the post a week or two ago. 4k+ total through my two 1911 45acp's in the last year or so and for 9mm, Staccato XL 6200 rounds since acquiring in Oct 2024, Staccato XC 3963 rounds since acquiring Feb 3rd this year and another 2k or so with the Produgy fiasco. That's about 12k of 9mm over two years, majority being Blazer Brass. One bad round ain't bad I guess.

I'd have to take an educated guess. My wife could probably go through the financials and tell me how much I spend on ammo, but that wouldn't be accurate because I buy a lot of ammo with money she is not in direct control of. My guess on handguns ( which is almost entirely 9mm at this point) is 500-700 rds a month. About half and half BB and S&B 124. Shotguns is probably a little more than that. ARs is more sporadic. It all depends on how often I can hook up with my pals that like to do timed transition stuff.

Out of all the 1000s of rounds have shot i had one bad round, a dud. Unfortunately it was when I pulled the trigger on the biggest buck I ever saw. What would have turned out to be my last. Guess someone was telling me it was time to just go out to watch animals.

You and I eventually came to the same conclusion. Although I actually killed mine. Which like the 9 or so that preceded it, made me feel bad.

this "could be" one of many reasons why my gun club, or the public range forbid rapid firing.

i adhere to that rule, even when i shoot MY reloads, which i have had (if i recall) at least 5 squibb loads since i started reloading, 3 years ago, and those were from my earlier reloads.

any major ammo maker can have an issue, i'd like to think they are perfect, but shite happens on an assembly line too.

glad you were not hurt
