Buys that turned into great buys in the long term

This one is actually a series of buys that have worked out great for me. They are Guide Gear desert style boots. They are non insulated water proof side zip boots. I wore them as my work, hunting, and every day boots for a good ten years now, all seasons. In winter I add a pair of sheepskin insoles and heavier socks and am comfortable down to well below zero and on snow. I find them to be on of the most comfortable boota I have ever had, every bit as good as boots costing a lot more.

I generally got about a year at work on concrete before they failed the sole wear inspection and I had to replace them, the old ones went to hunting and out door use and the new ones for work and every day wear.

The "good pair" I have now were bought a month before retiring two years ago and still look brand new.

S&W Model 4006.

I have always been a fan of third generation Smith & Wessons. When I got my concealed handgun permit my carry gun (that I never actually carried) was an RIA 1911.

My wife told me that I should buy a .40 S&W handgun because she thought it would be cheaper than a 45 ACP gun.

I looked all over for a Model 4006 I could not find one to save my life. I ended up buying a CZ75B in .40 S&W. It was a damn good gun and I carried it I for probably 8 or 10 years but it wasn't the 4006 that I wanted.

So I joined my church security team I in 2013. The very first time I went to the range with them the security team leader was shooting in the lane right next to me and I noticed that he had a Model 4006.

So I told him how I'd always wanted one and was never able to find one. I didn't make an offer on it or anything I just told him that he would always been one of my favorite model guns and I'd never been able to find one.

The next morning in church he offered to sell it to me for $200. He said he wanted to make sure he gave me a "fair deal" on it (Ya think?). I asked him to hold on until I cleared with my wife. I bought it cash a day later.

This. By the time I sold it I had put 166,000 hard miles on it, been up Pikes Peak, became a fixture on the Dragon, raced it on track many times, owned the Pig Trail in Arkansas and many, many other exploits. Swapped and tuned the engine, fully adjustable suspension from inside the car, among the many mods that I bled pints of blood over. The only original item left in the car was the passenger seat. Got it striped by a guy who would become my greatest friend. The car changed my life and I have regretted selling it every single day since I sold it 3 years ago. I cried when the new owner drove off in it.

Some time in the mid 80s the military had trials to get a new arctic canteen. One company that did not win the contract put them up for sale for a very short time in the now defunct Brigade Quartermaster catalog and that was the only place I ever saw them for sale, for a very short time, I think two catalogs and they were gone.

I really liked the look, it was a stainless double walled vacuum bottle and it fit into a normal canteen cover. So, I ordered two one for me and one for my wife. I liked them so much I ordered one for dad, one for Don and one for my father in law. I got all those three back when they each died and gave them to nephews and my son in law.

They will keep hot stuff hot all day out hunting and cold stuff cold. They came in black coated and bright stainless, I have one of each these days. Sure glad I found them they get used all year round.
