It's hard to see why they stopped this nifty practice. There may be a hidden reason that isn't immediately obvious to the viewer. Sometimes a change in policy disguises the rationale behind opaque decisions.

I'd seen somewhere that the Royal Navy (British) were dabbling with that particular design (around WWII, maybe ?)

I'd figured camoflaged ships were submarines

Is that near Tower Bridge ? HMS Belfast was there a long time ago when I was there last, but I don't remember seeing her in camoflage. It could have been, though. It was a damp 'grey' day everywhere in London that day. Imagine that.
