Can 5.56mm ammunition be safely fired in a .223 Remington Steyr Scout?

It would depend on your exact chamber...if your leade is on the generous side for .223, you’d probably be OK, as long as the 5.56 you were shooting wasn’t in the hot side.

I understand what you’re saying, that’s why I’ve not attempted it.

Company’s like CZ actually state that 5.56mm is safe to fire in their .223 REM rifles.
Surely it would be in any manufacturer’s interest to state for the record whether it is safe or not.

The answer to your question is.......perhaps.Some websites say yes, while others no.
I wrote to Steyr asking the question but received no reply.
If anyone knows definitely, please let me know!

I would not trust a website for the positive answer.
The no reply from Steyr may be poor customer service, or their way of saying "no".
I know; pressures, tolerances and so on are close.....BUT, technically, 5.56mm and .223 are two different calibre's.
And the Cardinal rule is.........don't mix calibre's !

Yes, my rifle looks identical. However, my rifle is now over 20 years old. It only has .223 REM stamped on it.
I guess I’ll just stick with .223 REM.
