Can a SOCOM 16 Stop a Bear Attack?

View attachment 75264

I mean this will stop a bear attack. Probably more reliably than a rifle.
In your dreams. What if the wind is howling, like it often is in AK? Or pouring down rain, as it often is in AK? Plus, if you don’t know what “charge momentum” is then you better find out before you risk your life on “bear irritant in a can”. Good luck to you………hope all the weather factors are in your favor.

Took almost a whole mag to bring this one down when my young son used a 5.56. It had a 300 acre field to cross. Only reason we got him.
I’ve also seen one drop with one shot of 5.56 when my son “earholed” the hog. I’ve hit a hog with 5 rounds of .308 before it went down as well.
I wouldnt want a bear coming at me with claws. I’ve had hogs charge me and its no fun. They will rip you wide open like a bowie knife was used

My point exactly. What if it came out of brush at 30 yards😳. I think the same way about bears. I want enough hp to thump one NOW😏. That typically means big, heavy slugs. Hunting in Tn a few years ago a buddy shot a big boar at about 25 yards and dropped it. He then made the comment “I thought boars were tough”. I said “Moose, you just shot him between the eyes with a .444 300 gr hard cast bullet. Of course he dropped”. Had the shot not hit at that point might have been very different outcome.

I'd say 223 ain't big enough... looks like you love to liver dangerously. A co-worker went hunting hog with a 44mag. One came out of the brush running right at him. He had time get get a shot off... hit him square just above the eyes and it bounce off the skull. He had time to scamper up a tree. Hog stopped only long enough to asses his pray and then ran off. Last time he ever used a hand gun for hunting.

Last year Bugle magazine published an ad by Vortex that compared a 9 x 19 with a 10mm in hanfguns.
Their 'anatomically' correct grizzley skull was penetrated by heavy buulets from both calibers.
That kind of hit should alter a grizzly's diet!

As has been said, one WAS killed by a .22 LR round in the ear-but I sure as the sun comes up ain’t ever going to be in big bear country armed with a .22. 😳. Tough, dangerous animals require the power to stop them NOW, not kill them 3/4 minutes after they were shot ( and a minute or two after they maul YOU. So far, we can still choose what to use. Do whatever flips your skirt. I’ll stick with 45/70 rifle or 12 gauge, with either backed up with a .44 Mag revolver. Overkill? Is there such a thing as overkill when something’s trying to eat you?

My son was 9 and a .223 was a size he could handle. It was his own rifle.
I’ve got near a thousand hogs down in the last 15 yrs. .308 and .300BO are just fine for hogs. .223 is light but works when pressed and thats what you have available.
I’ve been charged numerous times as well. .45 +p flat nosed hard cast will do a job. A shotgun w slugs is ideal for close in as well .
Hog in pic 1 was about 10 yrds out and charged out of the brush. Pistol dropped it

nice images....
.45+P... you are braver (and maybe a better shot) than I am. You turning any of that into bacon? Yummm,

.45+p HCFN will put a quarter size hole in their front sloped head plate . Sounds like a milk jug pouring milk when the action subsides.

Not too much on the bacan side anymore. Have to be 40lbs or so to taste good and got tired of skinning them out fast field side even for strap and loins . My son and daughter can lay down the law on hogs. Hogs can be very unpredictable, so we always have one person whose sole job is to watch for the close in rush and be “the closer”. We hunt at night w thrermals and it limits sight picture.
Closer stands with a hand held thermal, weapon mounted light and a heavy caliber looking for a boar to rush.

Some years ago I booked a Kodiak hunt after setting everything up I asked the guide what should I carry as a backup just in case he told me a 44mag or a 45LC loaded hot and heavy . Asked why not a .454 cas. and he told me because it only has 5rds and you might need something to fall back on.sic
splitting hairs here but no, some 454 cas have 6rds - see Ruger.

The only items I have currently that I would take with me are: Mosin Nagant. I figure that if nothing else I can hike with bayonet attached and brace for impact. After that is my AR-10 in .308. then I have a Maverick 88 in 12 gauge. Between the three the AR-10 is heaviest so I may choose that but honestly it would be a toss up between being found eaten with it or my Maverick.

Which reminds me I need to finish my G20 slide so the additional brass on the ground can be used to locate my corpse. I still want to go salmon fishing in Alaska though. Remember though.... Bears are incredibly cunning.

12 bore for the win for defense.

I can't get enough of this one

Truthfully, I don’t know which would be more nauseating………getting pepper-sprayed or having to listen another 10 seconds to the shrill, shrieking ear-busting voice of the unhappy kayaker. In any case, the bear wasn’t paying too much attention to either. And this bear represented the docile end of the bear behavioral spectrum…….not some enraged sow with cubs intent on scrambling your hash. If anyone believes bear spray is a reliable effective deterrent in STOPPING A CHARGE (after all that is the topic of this forum) I wish them luck.
