I spent the day with my kid and my grandson. Was telling my kid about this thread. My kid (who's 34) said, "I was shocked when I learned a few years ago that she's an actual woman. I grew up believing she was a drag queen." I had to tell him that when I was a teenager, Cher was actually considered pretty hot. I think she (and Sonny) came on the scene about 1965, when I would have been 11 and she'd have been 19.
