Choices Choices

There are very few product models of any manufacturer where the older ones are not superior to the current ones ... quality vs cost. Maybe not by much, but manufacturing cost, etc have demanded that manufacturers have to cut some corners to survive. That's not to say the bottom line quality has suffered, even though in some cases it has. But to survive, the costs to the buyer has to remain realistic by today's standards and economic circumstances.

It should go without saying that no manufacturer, whether firearms or widgets, want to arbitrarily reduce quality of their product. Sometimes it just becomes a reality. And at the same time, primarily due to economic reasons, some buyers will actually go looking for a lesser quality item just to get a lesser cost. Just the world we live in today.

Yep; the 28 was the “Highway Patrolman”, basically a 27 with a less fancy finish (also just had a serrated barrel rib, where the 27 had a hand checkered rib & top strap).

Exact same internals, though; the triggers on my 28’s are no different than my 27’s.
Too late to go look at one, but I believe the three 28s I've owned have completely plain top surfaces--no checkering, no serrations on barrel, topstrap, or rear sight. Maybe yours were/are different.

Here's my latest one, a 6" with copies of Smith Target Stocks made in Thailand or some such place. Amazingly cheap on eBay.

Oh, BTW, I noticed that once again, no one asked the OP exactly what he wants to DO with the gun.

You’re right; I was thinking of something else.

The 28/Highway Patrolman was usually illustrated in books and magazines very plain--almost always a 4" with Magna grips, sometimes a 6" with Magnas. But in one of Elmer Keith's books (Sixguns?), the illustration was a 6" with factory Target Stocks. When I saw that pic, I knew I wanted one.

I've never seen--either in person or illustrated--a 28 with either Target Hammer or Target Trigger, though I supposed it could have been ordered that way. Maybe even with RR/WO sights, I dunno.

This is kinda like saying I've never seen a '67-'68 Chevy Biscayne 4-door sedan cop car with Rally Wheels and Muncie 4-speed tranny with floor shift. Not saying it wouldn't have been possible to have ordered one that way, just sayin' I've never seen or heard of one. ;)
