Considerations for Building a DMR

With the overall quality of a standard AR15 increasing year after year, it’s pretty easy to slap on a free float rail, a 1-8x variable, grab some match ammo, and proudly proclaim you have a DMR (aka the Designated Marksman’s Rifle), however there are some additional considerations I would like to share with you before you get started on that DMR.

Mil-Dot vs BDC: Considerations for a DMR

Part 3
In Parts 1 & 2 the author concluded that a DMR would be best suited with an optic system which focused more on speed than precision, so it’s in the best interest of a modern rifleman to use a faster, but less precise BDC-based systems.
Examining the ACOG, or....

DMRs are for platoon overwatch, they aren't sniper rifles. And speed over accuracy, you mean speed AND accuracy, one is not interchangeable with the other.

I'm not sure what kind of criteria is necessary to call something a DMR, but I would assume accuracy would be far more important than speed or weight.

My Wilson Ranger is very light, VERY accurate and very fast with a 512c on it. And the kicker, I put a Hiperfire Designated Marksman trigger in it. :) That said, if I was in a marksmanship contest or needed to drill something right in the eye at 500 yards I would be grabbing the Browning 30-06.

Accuracy at speed, 30-06 is a good pick, for me it's an AR-10 although I prefer not being the DM, it's like, 'hey guys' hello, anyone...

I like that 512c you got, I am looking for another optic. My, what would be my DMR, currently has a Romeo7, which I love... but always looking for new things.

Yeah the 512 is great. Unfortunately they only make the 512T ( Titanium) now, which is about double the price. Their current closed emitter is the AES, which I don't care for personally, but...

Actually I just saw for sale in a few places the Holosun HE512. Priced about the same, a tad north of $300.

I have several 510Cs as well and they are awesome. QD mount. Only drawback is they're open emitter, but that's never caused a problem for me.

I liked the Romeo7 because of the huge FOV... for someone who's body seems intent on doing dumb **** aka astigmatism, I can hit with this thing with and without glasses. But, I will check out that HE512

The 512 and especially the 510 are like looking at a TV screen. I had Romeo 5s on everything. At one point I had 6 of them. ( they are also made by Holosun, but lack the doughnut of death reticle). 10MM turned me on to a good deal on a 510C and next thing I knew I had replaced all of the Romeos with either 510s or 512s.

Good input, I will check this out for sure

I remember reading an article on the Army's training of Designated Marksmen, the rifles used by students ranged from A2s (yes, open sights), to ACOGs, to scope mounted A4 DMR rifles.
Personally I was pretty enamored with the Marine take on things, an accurised M14 in a McMillan stock, with a Leupold 3.5-10 scope.
