Dishonest media reporting

It's part of the inherent balance between Freedom and " Safety " .

With the excuse of reducing crime , it is a valuable tool for authoritarian governments to monitor and control political opponents and disadents .
i can "see that"..

however, some of us (like me and the wife) live in a neighborhood that changed so much over the decades.

it went from you knew ALL your neighbors, to you keep to yourself.

it went from leaving your house for work, and not locking the doors, to bolting them

it went from manicured lawns, yards and well maintained paint on the house, to urban blight...but it is coming back..!!

it went from peace and quiet, to roaring cars, loud music, loud screaming.

the wife and i will not be forced out or made to move.

others may live in the woods, or a tropical island, or a well to do neighborhood...

we do not, so we welcome safety measures, and if that (and it does) include cameras, then good for us.

and NOOO...it is NOT easy to up and move at our age..!!!!!!!

I'm 70 and would rather have a stick shift. wish my trucks were sticks. at the time i bought them i got an auto so the wife could drive them. now she don't drive. gimme back my stick . lol. my Ford F250 was a 5 speed stick.
driving my 18 wheelers..YES, i wanted a stick, as i hated not having control over the power band of my 10 speed transmissions.

in my cars, since about the 1980's??

automatics.

i ain't had a pick up truck since i sold my '80 C-10 with 3 on the column, back in 1986, and went all out automatics.

I'm not concerned about my neighbors using their cameras on doors to see who is there. I understand the purpose of security cameras. I understand there are phone records for the same purpose.

However, what things are initially used for can be taken advantage of by bad actors at a later time. We don't get to some Orwellian authoritarian future all in one jump. We have had our privacy taken away from us more and more since 9/11 without any choice. Now we are in a time in which all of our calls, texts, and even conversations around devices go to a government information data base for our "safety." We are more often video recorded if we go anywhere populated. Some of the big name stores even have face readers, which were previously only used by deep state tech.

A lot of time, we like to talk about other countries and their faults, while totally ignoring what happens on our home soil. It's easier to process it that way, as single actions that don't add up to a sum, but they do. We need to face it and openly confront it.

I understand the sense of safety which people get, especially those who are older who lived in better conditions. I am under 40 and I already feel the uneasy change of time. However, what is a convenience of a sense of safety (remember, cameras do not prevent crimes actively, just like the majority of police calls), can be used to an even greater detriment. We have reached the scifi future 80s movies (or even going back to old time radio shows) warned us about.

i give up no freedom by having street, store, Ring doorbell cameras.

continue living in your woods, away from the real world.
You give up no freedom unwillingly anyway.

Sounds like your neighborhood is now the ghetto. If that's "The real world" you can keep it. I did about a decade in the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country. I've been shot at several times and had my friends murdered on my job site. I'm more than happy to live in the woods and work in suburbia.

it is not a ghetto, it is a Historic District, where it has been coming back to the old architecture of the houses are in full bloom.

however, not that far, like maybe 1/4, there are neighborhoods where people "roam" as they please, and bring thier shite here.

i rather enjoy the comforts of a quick responding fire dept, rescue (or ambulance service), and regular police patrols, and at least 3 major hospitals close by, over say a sit and wait for help to arrive, living out into the boonies.

Old_Me: Get up one the wrong side of the bed did we? We generally agree on most thing but here I feel your dead wrong. There should be some expectation of privacy, less than at when home, but even out and about. We may think we have nothing to hide, and do everything by the book but people tend to see what they want to see and then come up justifications. I'm twice as leery of the people looking at the images as the images themselves.

as long as no drones are flying over my property, or cameras atop electrical/telephone poles, and NOT aimed into my yard, then my privacy is not being violated. once such a thing happens, then YES of course, my privacy is being violated.

once we step foot onto a public sidewalk, or street, we are not "entitled" to anymore privacy, as we are "in full public view"

same as when we step foot into a shopping mall, or diner, or restaurant, repair garage, library, grocery store, etc,etc.....we are in a "common public place", not a private one.

there are millions of cameras in many areas now as it is, and more will be coming.

if that can help the LEO of what ever agency there is monitoring them, to help combat crime, and lead to a conviction, then i will always be for it.

also too, it can be a help to a person being beaten by bad cops, as it can help cops that are being beaten or shot at as well, by one or 2 people or a mob.

Back to the OP: No, cars don't shoot at each other. But the implication that it was the occupants is there. I think you're just splitting hairs there.

Cameras are both a blessing and a curse. For high traffic streets, business districts, private home and business security, I think they're great. However, cameras everywhere, watching everything? No thanks. Always remember that every good thing has the potential to be abused and there are those more than willing to abuse them.

When the government had motorcycle shifters moved to the other side, it confused me for about 2 minutes. I do miss a manual for 4 wheels, but they can be a pain in stop and go traffic.
Stop and go traffic on a motorcycle is no picnic, either. The pain is in the left hand but not the leg.

But I sure as hell don't want an auto-transmission on the bikes, either.
