Dissecting a Carrier Disaster

Fifty-five years ago, only days after the USS Forrestal arrived at Yankee Station, an errant Zuni rocket set off a chain of calamitous events on board the supercarrier.

in navy lore its not bs
he forced a hot start in the a4 and the flame event from his jet, was deemed as very possible source of the HEAT that set off the f4 rockets
he and many pilots back then got a jolly from dumping fuel then re lighting off engine to get flames out the back.
engine tech back then was very analog and mechanical

An A-4 skyhawk facing inward port side with its jet engine facing away out to sea would not have enough heat to light off a Zuni from an F-4 across the deck starboard side .

Lore is lore
Facts are facts

I’ll say it again. mcCain is an a$$ hate him
But this was a grave accident that he happened to be on the deck

Hey Puddle jumper or Powerboatr besides watching the two Pop Gun (Top Gun) movies have you ever been on an actual active flight deck? I mean tossing port, starboard, forward and aft with 25-30 knots of wind coming right at you not to mention either the sun or pouring rain beating down on you.
Let me tell you in my 20 years in the Navy 15 of them on four aircraft carriers. I worked in the Catapults and Arresting gear on the flight deck. Who ever told you that Sea Story about "hot starts" is full of crap! Any pilot caught doing it would have his wings pulled for endangering the ship and the crew and never fly a government aircraft again.
Powerboatr if you watch the filmon fire of the Forrestal "Trail by Fire" you will see how the whole thing happened. How the Zoney rocket really was set of and how John McCain almost got roasted. Every year I went to fire fighting school I had to watch it so just watch what happens when someone screws up... That's why we don't allow hotdogging on the flight deck.
The difference between a Fairy Tail and a Sea Story is. A Fairy Tail starts out Once Apon A Time and a Sea Story starts out This is No BS. Your hot shot story started out this is no BS...

Having no military experience to fall back on, I refrain from comment on the details. I do, however have great respect for all who have served both at sea and on land. What a horrific event this must have been. GOD bless our troops both past and present.

hmmmm i resemble that remark
no pop gun are not in my movie catalogue
carriers hardling ever toss that much, but you can stand in aft hangar and watch the fwd hangar rise and fall, with abit of waves breaking into the hangar bay on those especially nasty times . but nothing beats the flight deck of an FFG watching waves roll back over the stern as you cut through them, water chasing you back to the hangar.
and flying fish on the decks in the AM .
i watched that film every year at annual firefighting re qual and again doing DC classes on flooding etc etc etc.
if you were an AB you saw them a gazillion times as well

i worked many hours on cv60 America flight deck, along with IKE, Roosevelt and Kennedy.
Ships company on Saratoga, so no flight deck, just aircraft parts repair and lots of repair party training (luke I am you father) OBA time

smaller ships with a more real danger of taking a unscheduled swim , (valdez, normandy, joseph hughes, montgomery, kaufman, brown, and a few more i cant remember their names) CG, FF, FFG and DDGs , rotor blades just above head level on a heaving ship with waves splashing and salt air ...hmmm , you know only 3 people watching your back vice 50.:ROFLMAO:

and we were punished for tail hook and never invited , you rememeber the training film they made after tailhook about sexual harrassment made by the HOT LT in whites with her top button undone exsposing her trinkets??? not to mention it was a very form fitting uniform.
maybe my instructors were wrong, who knows. i will concede to agree it could be wrong or right.

i was also a master training specialist, we all know school houses change people very often and new and or improved training tracks get put on or off and is signed off by the civilians that run the navy
i find it hard to believe training aids and curriculum could have errors ;););)
