Echelon gun cleaning

First time gun owner here so this is probably a stupid question. I watched some Echelon cleaning videos on YouTube and they caution on getting cleaning oil in the firing pin hole. What will happen if cleaning oil do get in the hole? Will it cause malfunction or worse, possible accident?

Welcome to the forum from NJ.
Too much oil/lube can attract grime and “gum up” the works. So you want to use enough but not too much, if that makes sense. Also, only lube what moves.
Having said that some guns (1911’s and Garand-style actions) like to run wet. New guns may need a little more than ones that have 1000’s of rounds through them. You will learn what works best for your gun.
There are many here who are much more knowledgeable than me. I’m sure they will chime in.
Welcome to the world of firearms.

This does not happen with HKs though, they will run for tens of thousands of rounds through them no matter the condition without so much as a By Your Leave. This cannot be said for the Austrian neighbor to the south.

In the VP9 owners manual they left the section on cleaning blank.

Hi,

Welcome to the obsession. ;)

As has been mentioned, oil can attract dust, soot, dirt, and gum up the works. Worst case scenario, if you start getting light primer strikes you can clean the striker channel. Or let a gunsmith do it. But you'd really have to mess things up to cause it not to fire.

I use a two stage system to clean my guns, Shooter Lube. It has a solvent to clean and an oil to lube. I don't worry about getting a little spritz of the solvent in the striker channel but I do my best to avoid it. When applying the oil I put a few drops on a Q-tip and apply it just where needed.

After cleaning your unit a couple times you'll develop the procedural details that work for you. Read the manual, check more Youtube videos, get tips from your local gunsmith, etc. You're on the right track.

I have an Echelon 4.5F comp, as do others here. Happy to help! :)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Welcome to the abyss of the firearm world. You’ll figure out stuff at your own pace (and probably get a few more firearms). Me personally have installed the SA app on my phone for the just in case (I have the HCP OSP) I don’t have a clue what I’m doing. It has detailed instructions on how to clean your firearm (I learned on a Glock 43X and everything else is pretty close on what I have in my newbie’s inventory (except the 2 1911’s I have)). All I’ll say is clean it after each range visit and usually a good range has people that can help you with questions (some actually like dealing with newbies).
