First AR recommendations

For me, I bought a generic M-4 style. DPMS was considered moderately inexpensive at the time, I knew nothing about AR’s. There is much to be said about just getting one, anything. At some point you’ll start developing an opinion as to what you like and dislike. The idea you can buy once cry once isn’t exactly true in my opinion. Hunt? Personal defense? Competitive sport? Long range target? Like thinking a single ā€œbolt action rifeā€ will do it all. Depends on what your all is.

It’s pretty easy to modify and accessorize to your heart’s content. I believe money spent on a better trigger will not be wasted in any fashion.

A perienal discussion without end , with options all over the map from ultra budget to guccci .

Alternatively , l will put forth a * Yardstick * of price & quality matrix , against which the others can be compared .

Windham Weaponary . Currently $900 -ish , +/- $ 100 depending on exact sku .

Colt. Any Colt. (y)
Not any more.

15+ years ago? A LE6920 was as good as you could get…I still have one of mine from that period.

Now? There’s a lot of companies making the same quality rifle as Colt, for less. You can get a much higher quality rifle than a Colt for the same money that the Pony will run you, to boot.

I have absolutely no idea how much it cost but that's what my first M16A1 looked like

Dittos on Windham- they do make a good quality rifle. Wasn't sure they were still in business or I would've recommended them with Colt.. Prancin Pony guy personally, but Windham has been right up there. Personally I don't see the point in going cheapside on a weapons purchase you life and limb may depend on in a pinch.- I won't mention any names, but they know who they are... just sayin..

Good one- my first had the triangles, short buttstock, and didnt have the cartridge forward-assist. (Something which in all my years and rifle experience I have never EVER used or needed.) FWIW the original "short" buttstock fit me better than the "improved" long butt. YMMV, naturally...
It's hardly relevant to me personally, but I find the US search for a new rifle somewhat disturbing- old dogs and new tricks I suppose... 😜

Yeah? Well, some say Chevy, some say Ford... ā˜ŗļø

This isn’t brand thing. This is easily verifiable information.

I won’t even get into the QC issues Colt had post 2010 or so; it seems that CZ’s purchase of them is improving things, but…I was at my dealer when 3 Colts, all different models, came out of the box with loose barrel nuts (obviously canted sights & loose handguards) to really trust that brand again.

For the $1100, give or take, that NIB LE6920’s go for, you can do a lot better now…

After Colt discontinued one particular model most suitable for general use , legal in my state , the Windham equivalent became the new Yardstick .

Windham is still around . You don't hear as much popular buzz about them , because today they fall in the Crack of too expensive to be Budget , but not expensive enough to be Gucci.
