Flying brass...

belladonna

Hellcat
I did not want to interrupt an ongoing discussion in another thread, and I don't think that every time I go to the range should be documented in a range report, so I figured I had better put this in a thread of its own and let it live or die.
I took today off so I would be rested at the range, for a change. I took my Masada S, the VP9, the PDP Compact, and the husband's FNX.
So all I really wanted to do was to blow off some 115gr we had left in the safe. It was quite uneventful, believe me. I know now that I do far better with 124gr, but hey...I knew that already. Anyway, the husband wants me to break in his FNX (is it even a thing?) so I took it along and ran a few mags through it.
Well, I am FAR more accurate with that gun than with many others I own. That's not why I'm posting here though. You may remember recently I posted about .45ACP casings landing on my chest. Well, this gun ejects them into my face. Today I was hit in the face with hot brass several times. Now...is this normal? Is it just an "occupational hazard" with some 45s? I mean, if I was defending my life, a little hot brass in the face (or on the chest) is nothing. I'm just curious...I'm always curious  .

Oh, btw...the only target from today worthy of posting is from the assaultive little FNX beast.

That's some damn nice shooting ma'am. If it's an ammo thing as far as where the brass flies I think I would make sure any change you make doesn't effect accuracy. Shooting like that and getting some brass flung back at you is much better than brass landing safely elsewhere and not shooting like that.

Well, last week I figured out that is doesn't like 137 at all. FTF almost every round, but it ate 230 like there's no tomorrow so that's what I ran today. For that kind of accuracy, I don't mind a little hot brass in the face I suppose.. :giggle:

I've only ever shot 230 out of any of my .45s. None of them eject hot brass into my face though. I think you absolutely should try other ammo either way, but remember what kind you were using on that target. :)

It can sometimes be a grip issue; a little loose, and the gun moves enough to toss brass back, not up.

Have someone else run it and see if they’re eating brass as well…if they are, it’s an extractor/ejector issue.

But that’s some nice shooting.
This could very well be it. I am still not used to it, and he told me to put the small backstrap on it, but I haven't yet. I'll switch it out tomorrow when I clean it. Thanks Hans.

Nicely done! I have a similar experience with my 10mm P220 Legion. I've taken a few off the forehead from that one but never from a .45 or any other 10mm.

Hey! What're you tryin' ta say here? ;)

That is a really good looking target. Nice work. :)

Every once in a while I'll get brass bouncing off the top of my head. Once a casing landed on top of my shooting glasses. That one left a mark. It's been a while but I've even had brass find its way down the back of my shirt. Yeeow! My .22 pistols seem the most random and unpredictable, but the 9s and 45s have been behaving themselves lately. Maybe there is something to the "grip theory" because I haven't had any near-brass encounters lately. :ROFLMAO:

It looks like Mr. belladonna is going to have to get his own FN pistol. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

This. If it does it to you and others, and if it does it with all brands of ammo, it’s an issue with the pistol. Some el cheapo ammo isn’t loaded quite right and can make for funky performance. Years ago buddy bought some Chicom 7.62 X 39, got it real cheap. BANG, pop,Bang BANG , pop Pop,. No consistency at all one round would barely eject, the next one would throw brass into the next county. If your ammo is weak it may not be ejecting hard enough to Chuck it over your head (if that’s the direction it ejects in.

Great shooting. What distance were you at?

I know you said that you are a small frame, but is your cranium proportionate? I ask because I know @KillerFord1977 has casings in his cuffs because his continuously swelling head has developed its own gravity and pulls the spent rounds into its area of influence.

Seriously (as if I’m never serious), have someone else shoot the gun because maybe the extractor needs to be looked at.

You may want to search the FN Forum as well. https://www.fnforum.net/
