Flying brass...

Well, last week I figured out that is doesn't like 137 at all. FTF almost every round, but it ate 230 like there's no tomorrow so that's what I ran today. For that kind of accuracy, I don't mind a little hot brass in the face I suppose.. :giggle:
Must have missed some posts ,.but I'm not following. Are we talking two different calibers? 230gr is cliché for .45acp , but can't think of any vaguely common calibers, that have 137 gr as a semi standard factory loaded bullet weight ?

Probably frangibles.

I did not want to interrupt an ongoing discussion in another thread, and I don't think that every time I go to the range should be documented in a range report, so I figured I had better put this in a thread of its own and let it live or die.
I took today off so I would be rested at the range, for a change. I took my Masada S, the VP9, the PDP Compact, and the husband's FNX.
So all I really wanted to do was to blow off some 115gr we had left in the safe. It was quite uneventful, believe me. I know now that I do far better with 124gr, but hey...I knew that already. Anyway, the husband wants me to break in his FNX (is it even a thing?) so I took it along and ran a few mags through it.
Well, I am FAR more accurate with that gun than with many others I own. That's not why I'm posting here though. You may remember recently I posted about .45ACP casings landing on my chest. Well, this gun ejects them into my face. Today I was hit in the face with hot brass several times. Now...is this normal? Is it just an "occupational hazard" with some 45s? I mean, if I was defending my life, a little hot brass in the face (or on the chest) is nothing. I'm just curious...I'm always curious  .

Oh, btw...the only target from today worthy of posting is from the assaultive little FNX beast.

Re : Spent Casings to head

Greater than Zero possibility of something broken or severely maladjusted with extractor or ejector .

Most likely - Poor Grip & stance , combined with significant limp writing.

Hot brass landing in the chest area... I know a RO who prowls the firing line handing out shirts to the boyfriends or husbands of ladies showing up in them there black low cut t-tops. Anyone watching you tube has seen what happens when to does and it will. The rest of us would like not to be hit from the .38 she is shooting and especially a .45, but the view, fabulous...

I was shooting the green box Federal 137gr .45ACP.

I am fairly certain it is not the gun - it's me. The gun is big for my hand and I am not used to it. Hans pointed out to me that my grip probably had a lot to do with it, so I am swapping out the backstrap and will give it a go again on Friday. Thank you for your input though @Biggfoot44 . I do appreciate it!

I NEVER wear low cut anything to the range...EVER. I have certain high cut crew neck t-shirts and sweatshirts that are specifically for wearing at the range 🙂

Oh I wasn't judging, good way to get a blackeye from the source. Or from the Bride for even commenting and blaming me if it happens to her for not telling her how to dress. Yeah a damn if you do thing or... Still can't figure why the brass trajectory would hit one in the face from a top tier handgun unless you are shooting Speer 124 in 9mm. As my Beretta Performance actual hates the casings with failures to extract. The only one that will do that, something about the rim and just a guess as you talking God's caliber... Wait I have an FNX Tactical and mine doesn't do that.

On second thought, I agree with the weight of the round is most likely the issue as I tried to run some Norma 85 gr 9mm in the Italian Princess and wouldn't even cycle despite the 1350 fps. The S&W ate it with no problem as in order to shoot a 137gr .45, I bet a recoil spring change would be in order as that an extremely light bullet... IMHO and could be wrong but makes sense to me anyway.

Well, I know part of it is me. I swapped out the back strap, which really doesn’t make it feel any different except that the one I installed is not as aggressive as the one that was on it. So I know I need to work on my grip with that gun.
And I also know that from my own experience that FNs are fussy when it comes to what you feed them. My Reflex will not run 115gr. The FNX won’t run the 137 I tried to feed it. I need to work on my mechanics before I start replacing springs ( although what you say about that makes sense to me). It’s still the husband’s gun and he just wants me to be comfortable with it. Swapping out springs will be his decision (unless, of course, I happen to adopt it…stranger things have happened😉).

The 137’s are probably a big part of the feeding problem…that’s extremely light for a .45, and it’s not uncommon to need to modify springs in a pistol that runs frangible bullets (it’s one of the reasons the VP9 Match comes with two recoil spring setups).

When it comes to .45’s, stick with 185gr and heavier for optimal reliability.

Great response. You missed your calling in PR. I would have been all OH NO YOU DITN’T!

Makes a difference when it is yours and going to a heavier round would be my first choice. I have various springs for the race gun that is for the "Range" and not where my life may depend on it. Like jacking around with your car engine, you can make it faster and perform better, at the cost of reliability. Hans is correct in that God's Caliber picks up where mere smaller calibers fear to tread in bullet weight. The ole mass x velocity = the Wack and all the debate that brings. I am eyeballing a 5.7mm for penetration purposes. But the wack ain't a .45 whereas popping out the other side defeats the intent, thus another Range Toy... Best of luck or a balaclava is in your future and that will scare the crap out of your fellow shooters on the firing line.
