The 10mm Round – The History and Evolution

In 1983, the 10mm Auto was officially introduced alongside the Bren Ten, a semi-automatic pistol developed by Dornaus & Dixon. The Bren Ten was heavily inspired by the CZ-75 design and was intended to showcase the power of the 10mm Auto cartridge, one of the most versatile and powerful semi-automatic pistol rounds ever developed. The round was conceived in the late 1970s by legendary firearms expert Jeff Cooper. Cooper envisioned a semi-automatic handgun round that could deliver significantly more power and performance than the standard 9mm or .45 ACP.

The round is a popular backcountry protection option. The Danish Royal Navy Special Forces Long Range Patrol (Slaedepatruljen Sirius) carries the 10mm Glock 20 for protection against polar bears. According to reports they have had many successful stops on record.

I buddy bought a Colt Delta Elite when they were first introduced. We were stationed in Germany at the time. He bought it from the Rod and Gun club in Mainz. The only ammo available for at the time was produced by Norma. 200 gr FMJ that was HOT!

It made no sense for FBI to adopt the 10mm agency wide when some smart guys in their firearms unit would have opted for .45acp. They knew weight and recoil with the 10mm would be a training challenge from the start. They were driven to save face after the charlie foxtrot leadership failure in the Miami shootout, blaming the caliber instead of poor planning.

My son killed a surprise bear in Alaska with his 10mm Glock. I love my 10mm for its power, have killed many hogs and euthanized a horse with it, but it is just too dang heavy for me as an EDC.

I too bought the Delta Elite when they first came out, and definitely the Norma was hot, todays 10mm ammo doesn’t compare to the Norma to me, love my S&W 610

They couldn’t as the 45 was available before the Miami shooting so they had to have a new direction.

The sad thing is 9mm 115 Silvertip did great in other shootings but got chastised as did the 9mm when it was T the 9mm it was that particular bullet in that particular case (they’d had better results with 124 NATO ball as shot placement and penetration have solved more issues than caliber and expansion))

With the FBI going to the Hornady 135 plus p as so Texas DPS, Kansas State Troopers US Marshals and others they get that and are dropping dudes like bad habits now

I always enjoy reading these articles. Personally, I find the 10/45 to be adequate for east of the Mississippi, but out west it is a totally different environment.
I would say some of the Lieght defense type solid coppers might change the game a little with 45 acp and even 9mm for that matter

For me if I had a bear concern I’d get some hard cast Buffalo Bore or the like and run a 44 mag or 45 Colt S&W N frame as back up to a 12 gauge and Brenekie solid slugs (no fosters) or a 4570 guid gun!
