i was told not to use socks on firearms in a safe ? some thing to do with sock holding moisture
which seemed odd
i have 2 very old shotguns i try to protect alot, they stay well lubed , but an oiled rifle sock ??

I've got a few handguns that have been in socks for years, so far no damage. probably not a good idea to put a gun in one after wearing it playing basketball in the summer all day.
